10 Fun Activities You Should Do At Home With Your Support Worker

At Home Caring, we offer individuals the chance to benefit from a friendly NDIS support worker in their homes. It helps you get a level of disability care that makes you feel supported without needing to move into a care home.

Bonding with your home carer is very important, so we’ve listed a selection of fun activities you can do with them at home:

Gardening

This is always a popular activity as it gets you out of the house and lets you enjoy the wonderful weather. Your support worker can help you pot some plants, grow things in the garden or do any other gardening tasks. It’s a fun way to spend a few hours while ensuring you get some fresh air.

Play some puzzles & games

Puzzles are extremely beneficial to help with memory and brain training. Therefore, playing some tabletop puzzle games can be a great way to spend time with a personal care worker. They’ll sit with you and help you solve the puzzles, giving you hints if you need them. You could even play some classic games - like Monopoly or Connect Four - to pass the time while having extra fun.

Exercise together

It’s so important to remain physically active when you’re at home. Of course, you may struggle to do so while alone. So, exercising with your caregiver is a brilliant idea. You don’t need to do any crazy workouts; some Yoga in the living room or a walk around the garden is all that’s needed. It keeps you healthy, develops strength & balance and gives you something to look forward to every day.

Meditate

Meditation helps you relax your mind and body - it is really useful for managing stress. Your community care worker can teach you the basics, guiding you through a meditation session. After, you can meditate whenever you want! If you’re ever feeling stressed or struggling to sleep, remember the meditation sessions and you’ll soon unwind.

Cooking & baking

There are few better ways to productively pass the time than by cooking. You and your support worker can decide on different meals to cook each day. Be creative; cook things that are colourful or that you’ve never eaten before.

Better yet, get a bit messy in the kitchen by baking some delicious treats. Get rows of cookies in the oven or make a massive chocolate fudge brownie. Baking is so enjoyable - and you get the benefit of enhancing your cooking skills at the same time.

Develop your photography skills

Everyone has a smartphone these days and you can use yours to take amazing photos around the home. Have a competition with your NDIS worker; see who can take the best photo in an hour. You can each go around the house and take photos of whatever you like. The most creative or funniest picture wins!

Go on a treasure hunt

No doubt there are loads of great hiding places within your home. So, get a collection of items and hide them in various places. Then, your support worker has to try and find them all! After this, it’s your turn to do the searching as they try to hide some different items.

Daily lessons

It’s very beneficial to have some daily lessons with your home care worker. These lessons will be designed around helping you live independently. As a result, you can get by on your own when they’re not around. The lessons should be fun and they should teach basic skills - like cleaning, changing bed sheets, washing up, washing clothes, and so on.

Guessing games

Another very enjoyable activity that brings some fun competition to your time at home. Guessing games come in many varieties, but one popular idea is to guess the song. Play a snippet of a song for your care worker to see if they can guess. Keep taking turns and see who has the most correct guesses.

Arts & crafts

You can’t go wrong with some relaxing arts & crafts activities. Spend time sitting at the kitchen table colouring in a book or making something from scratch. You can even find cute little home pottery kits these days, letting you make anything from vases to little clay animals. These activities are great for developing hand-eye coordination skills while also being very fun.

As you can see, there are many amazing activities you should do at home with your support worker. If you are looking for home care services across Australia, please don’t hesitate to contact the Home Caring team. We’ll help you or your loved one get the support they need.
