Swimming is fun by itself, but if you really want to create a memorable pool experience for your little ones, pool games are the perfect addition to your day. The best swimming activities are safe, easy to learn, and fun for the whole family. When you head to your favorite gyms with pools in Sacramento, here are three games you can play with your kids for a memorable summer day.

Secret Message

This game is a fun way to help younger kids grow comfortable underwater and a fun activity for all ages.

Secret message is played with two or more players, but each round involves exactly two of them. The first player will get the secret message from you or another participant. You can leave the message open to be any word or phrase or narrow it down with categories to help the guesser.

Then, the guesser and speaker both go underwater. The speaker will say the message out loud, and then the guesser will have to try and figure out what they said when both kids pop up above the water.

Keep score of who guesses the most phrases right, or just play a game of telephone to see how distorted the original message gets.

Sharks and Minnows

You might remember this game from PE class, but playing sharks and minnows out of the water is like playing soccer in quicksand. It just isn’t the same.

But in the pool at one of the best gyms Sacramento has to offer, it just works.

To start the game, you pick one shark. They begin in the middle of the pool, with everyone else becoming minnows and lining up with their hands on one edge of the pool.

When you yell “Go!” all the minnows try to swim to the other side of the pool. The shark has to tag as many minnows as they can. Everyone they tag becomes a shark with them next round until only one minnow remains and is crowned the winner.

Air Ball

Air ball is another game that can be played with as many players as you want (as long as you don’t exceed the pool occupancy).

Just get an inflatable beach ball, spread all the kids around the pool, and see how long everyone can keep it in the air. You can add or subtract as many rules as you want, depending on the age of the kids playing. Say no double hits, catching, and getting out of the pool to start.

This game is great because it’s everyone versus the beach ball, so it encourages teamwork.
