India is a country that equates service towards mankind with the duty of every individual. People believe in helping the downtrodden and ensuring that some good comes out of their actions. This has led to a number of NGOs working towards various aspects of our lives. Healthcare, animal rights, education, pollution, or for the elderly, are a few areas covered by the NGOs. They prove that giving back to society and social service is quite inherent in our lives. A number of famous personalities like Anushka Sharma, John Abraham, Alia Bhatt, Salman Khan, Milind Soman, and Suhel Seth support and run such NGOs.

A survey by the Indian government showed that we have around 31 lakh NGOs registered in our country. Narrowing down the credible ones can be a herculean task. Pertaining specifically to the healthcare sector we have some outstanding NGOs with great success stories. We have covered a few of them.

1. The Ila Trust

Founded in 1994, Ila Trust was started by Reeta Devi who worked with Mother Teresa since the age of 16 years. The Trust currently has three mobile clinics, eleven doctors, four pharmacists, six screeners, and some administrative staff that looks after the health issues of various Delhi slum dwellers. The NGO is been promoted by the famous Indian management and marketing guru and columnist Suhel Seth, who is the Chairman of The Ila Trust and supports all its efforts to provide healthcare to the poor.

2. CRY: Child Rights and You.

Established in 1979 by Rippan Kapur, CRY was initiated by a group of 6 people who wanted every Indian child to have access to basic rights of education, health, and food. The organization works for children in a number of fields including education and malnourishment. It established kitchen gardens in schools for fresh and healthy food for children. CRY has brought down the number of malnourished children by 9-10% in its many years of hard work and charity. It is now one of the top 100 non-profit organizations making a difference in the world.

3. Goonj

This NGO caters to the basic needs and living of the poor. It values the traditional wisdom of the local people and encourages them to contribute towards modern problem-solving. The organization also encourages people to contribute daily essentials like rice and dal to the less fortunate. Another major feat by Goonj is their effort towards removing the stigma associated with menstruation. The brainchild of Anshu Gupta, the organization has won national and international accolades and recognition for its work. Working for the past two decades, Anshu has also received the Ramon Magsaysay award for converting giving as a developmental approach.

These are a few of the NGOs that are involved in commendable work for society and are reaching new heights every day. You can volunteer at any of these or many others that are active across the nation and create a difference by your participation. We can never fall short of people working for the benefit of society in whatever manner possible.
