  • A physical examination:
  • Before the actual cleaning process begins, your dentist starts with a physical examination of your entire mouth.
  • Dentist’s use a small mirror to check around teeth and gums for any sign of gingivitis (inflamed gums) or other potential concerns.
  • Removing plaque and tartar:
  • Your dentist uses an ultrasonic scaler  to get rid of plaque and tartar around your gum line, as well as in between your teeth.
  • You’ll hear scraping, but this is normal. The more tartar there is in your mouth, the more time they’ll need to scrape a particular spot.
  • Brushing and flossing stops plaque from building up and hardening into tartar.
  • Once you have tartar, you can only have it removed at your dentist’s office.
  • Polishing and flossing:
  • Next, your dentist polishes the teeth and removes any stains using a handheld electric tool with a rubber cup attached and a gritty toothpaste called prophylaxis paste. You can expect to feel a slow grinding motion on the teeth during this step in the process.
  • Your dentist asks you to rinse your mouth with water & then will floss your teeth to remove any remaining plaque and paste.
