Like many gun owners and firearm enthusiasts, you may be considering buying a suppressor. You may want to add a suppressor to your gear lineup because you’re interested in a quieter shooting experience, or you want to reduce muzzle flash. Or you may be interested in the accuracy a suppressor may add to your compatible firearms, such as your MK12 rifle.
Regardless of your needs, there are several things to keep in mind before investing in a suppressor. Obtaining a suppressor for the first time can seem like a chore, but in reality, it can be a smooth experience (though it can still be time-consuming). Thankfully, when you go in prepared, you can end up with the ideal suppressor for your needs.
Do You Meet the Legal Requirements?
This is a big question to get out of the way. Suppressors are perfectly legal in 42 states, and there’s a relatively straightforward process in place to obtain one. However, you want to make sure you’ve ticked all your legal boxes.
For reference, the eight states prohibiting suppressor ownership are California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.
Honestly, simply living in one of the 42 legal states is the biggest hurdle. From there, you can start the purchase process through your retailer of choice and then work through the registration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), specifically through the National Firearms Act Division (NFA). You can also buy a suppressor through select retailers that may guide you through the process.
What Kind of Suppressor Are You Interested in?
Before you officially start the ATF registration process, you can select your suppressor of choice. Even if you are in the early stages of your research, you may have an idea of what kind of suppressor you want, as well as your intended applications. From there, though, you want to get specific and decide if you want one or more suppressors—maybe you want one for your pistol and your Mark 12 rifle.
You need to answer a few questions as you make your selection:
● Are your current firearms compatible?
● If not, do they need to be modified for compatibility?
● Do you want a direct thread (threads directly to the firearm barrel) or a quick detach suppressor (uses a secondary attachment device for easier wrapping between firearms)?
Do You Have the Necessary Paperwork Ready?
From there, you can make your purchase. You won’t get your new suppressor just yet since there’s still more paperwork to fill out. As fun as that sounds, it’s just the process that’s been established. Some dealers will walk you through the process and point you in the right direction. They will likely be in routine contact with you after you buy your suppressor to ensure you have everything needed for ATF forms.
If you choose to handle registration yourself, you’ll need to visit the ATF website and follow their directions. This includes filling out eForm 4 (if you want to do everything electronically—there’s also a paper Form 4). Part of the process also includes registering your fingerprints and a photograph of yourself (similar to a driver’s license photo). You’ll also receive a PIN, which will go on your ATF form.
Ultimately, getting your first suppressor is as simple as following the steps. Once you’ve completed and submitted the paperwork, it’s time to sit back and relax. The approval process through the ATF can take anywhere between 6 to 9 months. Once you’re approved, it won’t be long until your new suppressor is in your hands and ready to be put to use.
