As you prepare your new water bladder tank for use, you may be considering different types of bases or platforms. You want to give your water bladder tank the best possible surface as it’s used. A carefully chosen surface helps keep the water bladder secure and helps you avoid damage to it. It may be a surface you intend to have in place on a long-term basis or only for a short while. What is the best surface for a water bladder tank? It comes down to your use case—as well as what’s available where you intend to use your water bladder. Here are a few surfaces to consider:

Concrete Is Solid and Reliable

If you have a concrete surface already in place just waiting for a water bladder tank, this is your best bet. Concrete won’t shift or disrupt the performance of a water bladder. However, it does have its downsides. If you’re using a pre-existing concrete surface, such as the floor of a garage or workshop, or on the pavement near your worksite, you want to be mindful of water flow. In the event water is drained from the water bladder, it needs somewhere to go. That may be a drain or a shallow channel. Avoid placing the water bladder on a surface that lacks drainage options. If you don’t have a concrete surface, but you intend to use your water bladder on a permanent or semi-permanent basis, you can install a surface. It can be a costly option, but again, it’s reliable.

Sand Offers Flexibility

Sand is a widely used base for a variety of small projects, and it makes a great platform for portable water bladders. This is especially the case when you only intend to use a water bladder tank for a short period of time. One example is on a construction site or other remote job site lacking water access. Sand goes down quickly and can be flattened and compacted into an even surface ideal for a water bladder. Sand essentially allows you to place a water storage bladder exactly where you need it with a little prep work. However, depending on the weight of the filled water bladder, the sand may shift or settle. Additionally, if the sand is exposed to the elements, it may wash away in rain. This can be mitigated by adding a support base frame of wood, stone, or brick, as well as a material to keep the sand in place.

Gravel Offers Compromise

When you need a material to go down quickly while giving you a reliable surface, gravel is a great option. You want smooth gravel that won’t scuff or damage the outer layer of the water bladder tank, such as pea gravel. Unlike sand, it’s less likely to wash away in wet conditions. It can also better drain excess water. Again, you can help keep the gravel level and in place with a built-up frame for extra support. This is a great option for locations where concrete won’t work or where a long-term solution is needed. For added protection, lay down a ground mat on top of the gravel (or any surface you intend to use for your water bladder tank). Look for products that come with a geotextile ground pad that protects the water bladder from potential damage and adds a little extra support.
