Distance Challenge
Chances are, you’ve played this game with your friends before. Even if you didn’t say it out loud, you all know everyone is trying to outhit the others.
Now, it’s time to add some rules.
Put a limit on the balls you can hit—3, 5, or 10 shots—and have the winner of each round picks the next club. Then, all you have to do is see who can hit the furthest. Focusing solely on adding distance to your shot can help you push your limits and find ways to add 10 to 20 yards to your clubs. Notice how this isn’t all about the driver, as you should be able to hit long shots with your fairway woods, hybrids, and irons as well.
H-O-R-S-E
If you’ve played H-O-R-S-E on a basketball hoop, you know the basic rules. The first person calls out a shot. Maybe hitting the 150-yard shot with a 5-iron. Or shooting a low fade to the side of the range with your hybrid.
If they hit it, you have to match. If you miss, you get a letter. The first person to spell out H-O-R-S-E loses.
It’s an excellent way to improve your accuracy with every club in your bag.
Target Practice
Target practice is a lot like H-O-R-S-E, except you won’t call out the shot or club. Instead, it’s all about hitting the target. Together, you choose a target, such as a flag or range feature, if your range isn’t perfectly flat. Then, you all hit your ball to get there. Use whatever shot or club you want, whether that’s the most forgiving irons in your bag or a hybrid you want to work on controlling. The closest ball wins.
This mimics lining up shots on a course. Instead of adjusting to what someone else calls out, you learn to identify the perfect club and swing combination to get your ball to the target.
9 Shots
There are nine main shots that every golfer should aim to master:
• Draw
• Fade
• Straight
• High Draw
• High Fade
• High Straight
• Low Draw
• Low Fade
• Low Straight
The range is the best place to practice all of them. Each player gets nine swings, and the goal is to hit every one of these shots in whatever order you choose. Your score is how many you hit. That could be 4 out of 9, 7 out of 9, or even a perfect 9 out of 9. It adds a competitive element to specific shot practice.
