Ljubljana is small, walkable and easy to fall in love with. The car-free old town, the emerald Ljubljanica River and a hilltop castle make it one of Europe's most relaxed capitals. Here is how to spend two days there without rushing. This 48 Hours in Ljubljana Guide covers the sights, food and local tips you need.

Day 1: Old Town, River and Castle

Morning: Start at Prešeren Square
Begin at the heart of the city, Prešeren Square, named after Slovenia's national poet. Cross the Triple Bridge, designed by architect Jože Plečnik, and wander the pedestrian streets on both sides of the river. Plečnik shaped much of the city's look, so keep an eye out for his work as you walk.

Late morning: Central Market and Dragon Bridge
Walk to the Central Market for local fruit, cheese, honey and pastries. Then stop at the Dragon Bridge, one of the city's best-known landmarks and a symbol of Ljubljana.

Afternoon: Ljubljana Castle
Take the funicular up to the castle, or walk up through the woods if you have the energy. Inside you can explore the courtyards, the chapel and the tower, and the view of the red rooftops and the Alps in the distance is worth the climb.

Evening: Riverside Dinner
Dine at one of the cafés and restaurants along the river. Try kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), žganci (a traditional buckwheat dish) or fresh local fish, and pair it with Slovenian wine.

Day 2: Lake Bled Day Trip

Morning: Head to Lake Bled
Lake Bled is about an hour from Ljubljana by bus or car, which makes it an easy day trip. Take a traditional pletna boat to the small island with its church, and walk up to Bled Castle for the classic postcard view.

Lunch: Bled Cream Cake
Don't leave without trying kremšnita, the famous vanilla and cream cake. Plenty of lakeside cafés serve it.

Afternoon: Vintgar Gorge or a Lake Walk
If you like nature, visit Vintgar Gorge for its wooden walkways above the turquoise river. If you want an easier afternoon, walk the path around the lake, which takes about two hours.

Evening: Back in Ljubljana
Return to the city for a relaxed evening. Take a short river cruise, or enjoy a drink at a riverside bar while the old town lights up.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The old town is compact and largely pedestrian, so comfortable shoes are all you need.
  • Best time to visit: Late spring to early autumn has the best weather, and December brings festive markets.
  • Stay: Book a hotel or apartment in or near the old town to save time on transport.
  • Budget: Ljubljana is generally more affordable than many other Western European capitals.

Plan Your Trip Easily

Ljubljana works well as a short break or as part of a longer Europe route with Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.
