Nothing compares to a holiday spent on an island. From white-sand beaches, rainforests, and a magical underwater universe, island destinations are one-of-a-kind, and there aren’t many locations that can outshine this.

Southeast of the Bahamas, there is an archipelago of around 40 islands called Turks and Caicos. This destination, perhaps not as known as the Bahamas, or its northeast neighbor, Cuba, has breathtaking scenery and beaches where you will feel no worry in the world.

If you get the chance to reach this dream island destination, the variety of activities you can do there guarantee that your vacation will be one to remember. And it is also the best place to take some much-deserved time off, sip a cocktail and soak in the sun.

In case you aren’t convinced yet, we have compiled a list of reasons why the Turks and Caicos Islands should be your next destination. Perhaps you don’t necessarily need any more convincing, but a travel guide would help you to make the best of your holiday on this dreamlike island. We’ve got you covered:

  1. Whale Watching

The season from January to April is probably the best time when you should go to Turks and Caicos. Apart from the fact that the temperatures are mildest, not too warm or too chilly, with around mid-20 degrees, and an incredibly soothing breeze, you get an incredible experience. Whale spotting is definitely something you don't see every day!

Head over to the Salt Cay, one of the smallest islands part of Turks and Caicos archipelago, with only 108 inhabitants. This is an incredible experience in itself, as there are no luxurious resorts – tranquility is surrounding this place. With cars barely being present and a few restaurants serving fresh seafood, of course, Salt Cay is an oasis of peace. So, you can imagine how whale watching can perfectly complete this scene of serenity, with their tremendous fins splashing to the surface.

  1. Diving and snorkeling

Probably a must-do activity, if you travel on an island, is either diving or snorkeling. Depending on how courageous you feel, it would be a shame if you didn't witness the fantastic wonders of the underwater world. Snorkeling doesn't require much training or supervision, given that you aren't swimming deep in the water. On the other hand, diving is a bit more complicated. Although it isn’t dangerous if you have proper guidance, you will need essential equipment if you go diving. This includes a wetsuit or drysuit, gloves, and fins. The most crucial piece of equipment is the scuba tank so you can breathe perfectly underwater, given that you could reach 20- or 60-feet scuba diving.

If you aren’t ready to go scuba diving just yet, snorkeling is a more accessible activity that doesn't require as many equipment items and is just as mesmerizing. You can witness the most colorful corals and beautiful harmless sea creatures. In Turks and Caicos, the best place to go for snorkeling is Smith’s Reef. It is well-known for excellent visibility underwater, and it isn't difficult to access either. So, you might want to give it a try – you won't be disappointed!

  1. Charter a yacht

If you plan this fantastic holiday in Turks and Caicos with your group of the closest friends, you should consider chartering a yacht. This destination is an archipelago of small islands with one beach more beautiful than the other, so there is much to see from a yacht. Not to mention, you have the freedom to stop anywhere you like and truly embrace the beauty that surrounds you.

If you decide to book a yacht charter, you can choose various packages from which you can choose, depending on your needs. For instance, if the holiday is just for you and your partner, you could book dinner and watch the sunset together. On the other hand, if you are a group of many friends and want to enjoy being on a yacht for more than a few hours, you could opt for a full-day package. If you wish to enjoy some moments of quietness or explore the nearby islands, there is an option to meet any preference.

  1. Hiking trails

Suppose you wish to explore the land side of the island. Turks and Caicos also offers incredible hiking – or biking, if that is more your style – trails. Therefore, for the individuals who are curious about this side of the islands, Crossing Place Trail is the one to choose. It is protected by the National Trust Heritage, and it goes back to the 18th century when islanders used to cross it to reach the trading location with North Caicos.

There is much to be seen if you go on a hike on the Crossing Place Trail, from various wild beaches and hidden caves to reaching coastal headlands and stunning views over Mudjin Harbor. A noteworthy mention is not to forget to bring sun protection, as you will be mostly walking in the sun. Another recommendation would be to wear durable footwear that properly covers your feet and even a pair of long trousers to protect you from the many rocks you encounter on your way. And, of course, bring water to stay hydrated.

  1. Swim to see stingrays

Whenever there is an occasion to witness sea life and exotic fish species that you would otherwise see in an aquarium – which is not nearly the same – it is a decision that you don't have to think twice before making. Gibbs Cay is renowned for being the go-to place to watch friendly stingrays swim to you or even swim together with them. And do not worry, as there are highly skilled sea specialists who have vast experience with stingrays. Therefore, they can show and teach you how to interact and connect with them adequately.

Apart from this unique experience, this is also a proper place if you want to go snorkeling and see coral reefs. What's more, Gibbs Cay is not only the place for underwater creatures, like butterflyfish, parrotfish, or the stunning stingrays, but here you can also observe a variety of seabirds.
