A Temporary Resident Visa or Tourist Visa (TRV) is an official document on your passport that tells the Canadian authorities that, as a guest, student or worker, you have fulfilled the criteria for entry to Canada. Before they can join Canada, Canada allows citizens of some countries to receive a TRV. You would need to apply for that document through a separate application if you want to study or work in Canada.

1. Using an Immigration Agent or Law Firm Unchecked

Sadly, this is one of the most common reasons why so many applications for Canada visit visa are denied or delayed. There are several fraudulent companies providing free interviews and exclusive discounts, as well as providing work opportunities and visas, taking advantage of hopeful applicants. Identity theft, fraud, theft of bank account or credit card information and computer viruses are also the result of these scams.

These scams (fake websites and fake news) take place telephonically, via email, and/or the Internet. False news reports that Justin Trudeau (Candian Prime Minister) was begging the Kenyan and Nigerian prime ministers for 1 million skilled staff began circulating earlier this year.

2. You only submitted the documents on the checklist of Citizenship and Immigration Canada

As a summary, here are the documents needed by CIC for a standard visitor visa (although documents can differ depending on your location and other circumstances, keep in mind):

  • Forms
  • Fees-Fee
  • Pictures
  • Passport
  • Proof of financial backing
  • Photocopy of your return ticket and/or itinerary for your trip
  • Any additional documentation that the local visa office needs

Recall the visitor visa issuance exam in # 1, above. Do you think these documents alone will prove the visa officer's case to you? Perhaps, but in certain situations, maybe not.

3. You have not offered proof of all your ties to your home country to show that you are going to return home.

Many applicants for visitor visas do not recognise all their ties to their home country and the documentation that shows it.

Things like property and work are obvious ties to your house. Your TRV application should include copies of property title deeds or lease agreements translated by a professional translator and extensive letters or contracts of employment that describe you as your employer's permanent employee, the period of your employment, your place in the company, and when you are expected to return to your work.

4. You have not given ample details that shows you are in good health

When you apply for a visa, you will need to get an immigration medical test performed by a government-approved medical institution or specialist. Inadmissibility in medicine means being:

  • A public health threat (which involves having an active infectious disease, such as tuberculosis or syphilis, or having contact with someone with an infectious disease)
  • A public safety risk (which involves the deterioration of physical and mental capacities, erratic or aggressive behaviour); and/or
  • Excessive demand for health or social services (depending on whether the cost of your medical procedures will place too much pressure on the Canadian public health care system and have a negative effect on waiting times)

5. Your letter of invitation was insufficiently informative.

  • It is prudent to get an invitation letter from your relatives (or friends) in Canada to endorse your application, as part of your reasons for coming to Canada, or to prove that you will have food and lodging in Canada.
  • The letter should not be too short, however. It should be comprehensive and transparent that this person will provide free food and accommodation (if that is the case) for you during your entire stay.
