Building my own website has been a learning experience in more ways than I expected. I’ve been paying more attention to SEO along the way, especially to the small things that can make a website easier to find and easier to use.
Here are five simple SEO things I’m focusing on while building my website.
1. Choosing relevant keywords
Before writing a page, I try to think about what someone would actually search for to find that information. Using relevant keywords naturally in headings, page copy, and other important areas helps make the purpose of a page clearer.
2. Writing useful page titles and descriptions
Page titles and meta descriptions are easy to overlook, but they help describe what a page is about. I try to keep them clear and relevant instead of simply filling them with keywords.
3. Optimizing images
Images can affect website performance, especially when the files are unnecessarily large. I’ve been making sure my images are properly sized, compressed, and given descriptive file names. I also use alt text when it helps describe the image.
4. Making the website mobile-friendly
A website can look completely different on a phone compared to a desktop. I’ve been checking my pages on smaller screens and adjusting layouts, spacing, images, and text so the site remains easy to use.
5. Building relevant backlinks
SEO isn't only about what happens on your own website. Links from other relevant websites can help people discover your content and can also contribute to your site's overall online presence. I’ve been exploring different platforms to share useful content and naturally link back to my website.
While building my own site, I’ve realized that SEO isn’t just about adding keywords everywhere. It’s more about making your website useful, understandable, and easy to navigate.
