Garages are often large, but underused spaces, and even if you store a vehicle inside, there’s still usually a lot of space left unutilized. If your garage feels like a waste of space, here are some ideas for renovating it so that it can be used and enjoyed:

1. Turn it into a livable space

While this might be one of the costlier ways to make use of your garage, and requires more planning than some of the other renovation ideas, converting it into livable space can give you so much more room, and even make your home more desirable and valuable should you come to sell it. Depending upon your needs, it could be turned into a home gym, bedroom, office, playroom or workshop and the extent to which you convert it, is entirely up to you. Go the whole way and change the door, add windows, put furniture in and make it a great space for guests or family members to utilize, or simply make it comfortable enough to be used occasionally, for unexpected guests or a kid’s sleepover, for example.

2. Give it a new floor

The plain concrete floor in your garage may be what’s deterring you from using it for any purpose other than storing junk, but with an upgrade to tiles, hardwood or even carpet (the choice is yours), you can make your garage ten times more inviting already.

3. Refresh the paintwork

Use bright colours to lift the interior of your garage and make it more appealing, or have the walls completely resurfaced and given a fresh lick of paint to rejuvenate the space.

4. Insulate it

Nobody’s going to want to spend time in a garage if it’s freezing cold in the winter, and stiflingly hot in the summer months. Not only that, but without insulation, if your garage is attached to your home and rooms adjoin it, then regulating the temperature is always going to be tricky, and your energy bills could skyrocket.

If you plan to convert your garage into a livable space, now or in the future, insulation is virtually essential.

5. Insulate the garage door, too

If you’re going to insulate the walls of your garage, then you should really insulate the door as well. Upgrading to a steel door with foam insulation can help you keep the garage at an ambient temperature.

6. Loft it

This option enables you to still use your garage for parking cars and other vehicles, while the top, lofted section can be used as an extra bedroom, office or living space for you, your family members or guests.

7. Have windows installed

This can really make your garage come to life, since they’re often dark, gloomy spaces, and if you’re worried about intruders being able to see inside, simply hang curtains or have blinds fitted, just as you would in your home.

Renovating your garage is a fantastic idea, especially if you want to get more use out of the space while boosting the value of your home. Just make sure that you get advice from a renovations company with experience working with garages, and never try to carry out any of the major work yourself.
