A Life of Chapters: Warren Roaf’s Journey from Classroom to Counselor Through the Power of Story

Warren Roaf has spent much of his life in education. Starting out as a social studies teacher, he believed deeply in the power of history to shape thoughtful, responsible citizens. His dedication led him to school leadership, eventually serving as the principal of Mount Anthony Union Middle School in Vermont. In each role, Roaf brought consistency, encouragement, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. His classroom may have changed over time, but his core mission of guiding and empowering others has never wavered.

A New Role in an Iconic Setting

Retirement opened up a new avenue for Roaf’s storytelling instincts. He found a second career as a tour guide at Fenway Park, the legendary home of the Boston Red Sox. The position suited him perfectly—drawing on his passion for baseball and his natural ability to connect with people. This chapter in his life rekindled his appreciation for stories, setting the stage for a creative pursuit that had long waited in the wings.

Writing as Purpose and Pathway

Roaf’s transition into writing began with a spark: a creative writing course at the Clark Art Institute. That spark turned into a steady flame as he explored poetry, short stories, and reflections. Writing soon became more than a hobby. It became a method of processing life’s complexity and offering something meaningful to others. His books—Depression Does Not Have to Win and The Armor Against Depression—are testaments to this purpose. They provide insight, support, and structured strategies for navigating emotional hardship, especially for those unfamiliar with how to ask for help.

Blending Insight with Compassion

Unlike clinical texts or formal memoirs, Roaf’s books combine the structure of a teacher’s lesson with the empathy of a trusted friend. Drawing from decades of professional and personal experience, he crafts each chapter to offer practical guidance and emotional clarity. Readers find not only his story but also their own reflected in his words. The result is literature that instructs, soothes, and motivates.

Family as Foundation

Throughout all of life’s changes, Roaf has remained grounded in his family. He lives in Bennington, Vermont, with his wife of forty-seven years, Carol Ann. A dedicated adult literacy tutor and gifted quilter, Carol is both Roaf’s partner and quiet collaborator. Together, they have raised two sons; Christopher and Joshua, and enjoy time with their daughter-in-law Crystal and grandson Caden. Family plays a central role in Roaf’s life and writing, offering strength and continuity during times of challenge.

Extending the Reach of His Voice

Roaf’s influence extends beyond the written word. He has become a quiet but persistent advocate for mental health awareness, especially among men who are often reluctant to express vulnerability. Through talks, interviews, and one-on-one conversations, he encourages open dialogue about emotional wellness, spiritual resilience, and the need for authentic connection. His approach is grounded, nonjudgmental, and deeply human.

An Ongoing Story

Warren Roaf continues to write, share, and listen. His life is now shaped by intentional reflection and a commitment to help others navigate their own struggles. Whether recounting memories from the schoolyard or the ballpark, he remains a storyteller at heart. His message is simple yet profound: every chapter matters, and healing often begins when we choose to tell our truth.
