I suppose we have to start with why is it that people choose to use drugs when it is patently obvious that they are bad for you to the point of killing you. There are as many reasons for drug addiction as there are drugs (legal and illegal) out there to get addicted to. It's safe to say that there is of course no one particular reason for getting involved with drugs. Also, as we are all individuals, there is no one particular profile of a drug abuser. We have the best drug rehabilitation centre in Pune.

It is a fact that people who come from a family with a history of drug abuse are more likely to take that path themselves. The children of drug abusers and alcoholics will often show those tendencies. Drug abusers have often a feeling of low self-esteem, their children grow up at a very impressionable age to have low self-esteem themselves, and see drugs/alcohol as a way out of their problems, the same as their parents.

Drug addiction is also a biological thing. After a short time of taking a substance, the brain becomes used to the chemical changes that are induced. So much so that the brain then actually requires these chemical changes to function, and drives the user to ingest more of the substance, more often, thus creating a vicious circle.

This can start as simply being prescribed strong painkillers for a condition. The person taking them initially takes them for the pain, then starts taking them not just when in pain, but to stop the pain from returning at all, taking larger and larger quantities at ever more frequent intervals.

Having said there is no one particular profile of a drug addict it is recognized that some people are more prone to addiction than others. Those with low self-esteem tend also towards depression. They take drugs as a means to cope with life and interact with people around them, whom otherwise they might feel overawed and threatened by. The drugs make them feel good about themselves.

Stress can also be a factor in drug abuse. Modern life can be incredibly stressful. Some people thrive on stress, while others find it difficult to cope. They look for a way to ease the stress and often turn to drugs and/or alcohol. Of course, when the effect wears off the stress is still there, so they take another hit, then a larger hit, and so on.

And of course, we cannot ignore the fact that drugs are easily available in large quantities. The market is huge, and organizations have developed to take advantage of that market. In real terms, drugs are now probably cheaper than they have ever been. Starting with pocket money quantities outside the playground. If we are ever to get to grips with the problem of drug addiction we have to start looking at the causes and tackling the problem from there.
