In 2006 and 2007, the Ramazzini Institute (RI) discovered that aspartame produces dose-related increases in malignant tumours in several organs in rats and mice. Even at low exposure levels close to the Recommended Daily Intake, there was an increase in cancer risk (ADI). At lower concentrations than humans, prenatal exposure exacerbated cancers in rodent offspring. These findings sparked heated debate about the veracity of RI's diagnoses of haematological and lymphoid tissue cancers (HLTs). The pulmonary lesions identified in aspartame-exposed rats, according to critics, were inflammatory lesions caused by Mycoplasma infection rather than malignant neoplasms.
