Acetylene, which is better known by its systematic name, ethyne, is a well-known chemical compound. It is a hydrocarbon, which is the simplest alkyne. This colourless gas is most utilised as a fuel, as well as a synthetic building block. It is unstable, and in its pure form, it is, therefore, handled as a solution. Pure acetylene is odourless, but industrial grades have a distinct odour typically because of their impurities. As an alkyne, acetylene is unsaturated since two of its carbon atoms are bonded together in a triple bond. The carbon-carbon triple bond places all four bits in the same straight line, with CCH bond angles of 180.
