After Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion into neighbouring Ukraine more than six months ago, the two countries are engaged in a struggle for control of areas throughout eastern and southern Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, in August whose forces began an offensive, has vowed to take back all Russian-occupied territory. Putin announced a mobilization of reservists, which is expected to call up as many as 300,000 additional troops in September.

On Monday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia’s missile assault on civilian targets in Ukraine showed Russia’s “true face”. 

According to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service Eleven people have died and 64 are hurt across eight oblasts and the city of Kyiv. 

Zelenksyy said on Twitter “Of a terrorist state the world once again saw the true face that is killing our people”. “On the battlefield & in peaceful cities. With talks about peace in a country that covers its true bloody essence & goal. Liberation is the only basis of peace & security it proves that”. 

Across Ukraine was a response to Saturday’s attack on the bridge connecting Russia and Crimea Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday’s attacks on civilian areas.

By land, air and sea Russia has launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine, since World War II and confirmation of the worst fears of the West, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe.

On Ukrainian cities Russian missiles rained down. Across its borders into the eastern Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, and landing by sea at the cities of Odessa and Mariupol in the south, Ukraine reported columns of troops pouring. 

Ukraine’s border guard service said that with Belarusian support Russian troops attacked Ukraine from Belarus as well as Russia, and an attack was also being launched from annexed Crimea.

In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv explosions could be heard before dawn. Across the city Gunfire rattled out near the main airport and sirens blared.

He had approved a “special military operation the attacks began on Thursday” after Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address. The move came after Moscow earlier recognised rebel-held territories and said they had asked for its “help” in Luhansk and Donetsk.

In Ukraine the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv emailed Americans, warning that they should shelter in place.

The email said that “using privately available ground transportation options when it is safe to do so in the U.S. The Embassy urges US citizens to shelter in place and depart Ukraine now”.

Across Ukraine on Monday morning air raid sirens sounded, as a series of Russian missiles struck civilian targets in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and other cities.

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said that toward Ukraine Russia launched 75 missiles. Zaluzhnyi said by air defences forty-one of those missiles were struck down. 

The officials said that in Kyiv at least eight people died and 24 were injured. At least five missiles struck the capital at about 8 a.m. local time.

Missiles hit the capital’s central Shevchenko District, with explosions near Parliament and other government buildings. Ukraine headquarters Samsung’s, which is next to Kyiv’s main train station, was damaged. Photos showed smashed glass windows and what appeared to be significant damage.

In western Ukraine, power was out in much of Lviv, where several explosions were also reported. “Critical infrastructure” was damaged, the mayor said.

In Kharkiv at least six explosions were heard, where the regional governor urged residents to shelter in place.
