What Is G99?

G99 is a set of regulations that control any form of the generator device connection to run synchronized with the National Grid. These new regulations are formed based on Ofgem rules. The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is working as the administration for these rules.

The power stations have changed their approach toward supplying electricity to the mains electrical utility grid. The power sites prepared themself for the new ENA G99 Engineering Recommendation as these rules came into effect on 27 April 2019. All stations connected to the distribution network must add various G99 compliance components such as relay panels, UPS panels, and other devices. New solar, wind, battery, CHP, and diesel generation schemes significantly impact them due to these rules.

What Is The Purpose Of G99?

This Engineering Recommendation (EREC) aims to provide requirements to all licensed Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) connected with distribution networks. The guidance is designed to maintain the Distribution Network's integrity regarding safety and supply quality and facilitates the connection of the Power Generating Module. It describes all aspects of the connection process, such as standards of functionality and site commissioning. It also informs all parties, including Customers, Manufacturers, and Generators, of the G99 requirements by the local DNO.

How Does The Process Start?

The project is built on an agreement with all rules and conditions. A power station must apply to its Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to start the process. The power lines and infrastructure operating company connects the network to your property. The project is commissioned and tested with the G99 standard before becoming a part of the grid supply.

Power Generation Source- National Grid

The DNO also considers the following aspects during the connection approval process:

  • Voltage Rise and Step
  • Interface Protection Capability
  • Harmonics, Distortion and Unbalance
  • Fault Level Contribution
  • Reverse Power Flow
  • Clustering of Installations
  • Planning Consent and Land Rights
  • Existing Network Suitability

What Is The Importance Of G99 Mains Protection?

The landscape of power generation has changed dramatically in the 21st century. Now power generation relies on low-capacity generators connected together in large numbers rather than depending on the relatively small number of high-capacity power stations. Renewable energy sources such as wind Farms, photo-voltaic (PV) solar sites, and hydroelectric plants are on the top list for generating power compared to traditional resources like coal and oil.

The stability of a power grid might be disturbed by the rapid expansion of lower-capacity generators. It can damage both the grid and the generator. So it is essential to include a relay for all the system that runs parallel to the mains. The relay can decouple the generator and the grid in case of any problem.

Effects Of G99:

The new g99 affects the design and planning process of all renewable energy sources such as wind Farms, photo-voltaic (PV) solar sites, CHP, and hydroelectric plant grid connections with ratings above 16A/phase. The new standard also covers the integration of battery storage.

The requirements of G99 standards are more complex than previous regulations. So it is crucial to use the G99 grid application plan and design by electrical specialists. The design must be tailor-made for your preferred technology or equipment.
