Last week, Oil India Limited was going under a ransomware attack by a group of international hackers. This attack severely affected the Server, Network, and other related services of the Oil India Limited. They noticed this ransomware attack when employees working at Duliajan Headquarter of Oil India Limited noticed some technical problems on their computers.
Oil India, a major public sector company dealing in petroleum and petrochemicals, has been demanded a ransom of INR 57 crore by an international hacker group. An FIR was lodged by the company with the Crime Branch of the Assam Police soon after they noticed this cyber attack.
It is suspected that they breached the firewall of the company and entered into the company’s computational infrastructure. The IT system of the company has been seriously affected after this ransomware attack on Oil India Limited. The company’s general operation is nearly on hold after this cyber attack. The security manager of Oil India Limited quoted that the cyberattack took place on April 10, 2022.
They have also activated cyber experts and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team to investigate further in this regard. Since this cyber attack incurred a huge financial loss for the Oil India Limited, a senior police official registered a case number under the various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act 2000 and the latest amended IT Act 2008.
Initially, the company barred employees not to share anything about the cyber-attack on social media but the Oil India spokesperson talked with the media and shared information about the cyber attack. They shared that our online systems and services are down but we are operating offline. Our workstation of the geological and reservoir department is under attack that has data related to crude and hydrocarbons and various other sensitive data related to the company. He also mentioned that the drilling and production work is not affected at all. They assured the media that they are working to repair the system and network to make their services normal but it will take some time.
