First, the effect of sample thickness on the perforation resistance of aluminum plates is investigated. Aluminum 6061 Plates maximum resistance to perforation was achieved using 4 mm thick panels, as it was demonstrated that the perforation behavior of the investigated plates increases with target thickness. The aluminum plates were hit with various impactor head shapes to see how the projectile shapes affected the perforation behavior.
The findings demonstrated that flattened impactors used to impact plates provide the maximum perforation resistance. Moreover, the results showed that changing the size of the targets has no significant change in the dynamic behavior of the plates investigated in this study. Finally, it is suggested that the finite element models developed in this study can be used to capture the effect of the geometric and loading conditions of aluminum plates under perforation by low-velocity impact.
