Would you be able to live without the lush green turf in your front yard? Wintertime dormancy of Bermuda grass significantly reduces its curb attractiveness.

Who doesn't enjoy seeing a nice, green lawn outside their window? Or perhaps you enjoy barefoot strolling over the lush grass while remembering your carefree youth. But is having green grass year-round in the desert worth the effort and cost? Commercial Strata Maintenance maple ridge maintain that one of the greatest benefits of weathering the oppressive summer heat is having a lush green lawn throughout the winter. Others, however, point out that this demand for green is an environmental burden in many ways and a waste of several priceless resources. But where do experts stand on overseeding or putting up with some coarse bronze grass?

Few Facts Relating To Grass

The Bermuda grass and its hybrid forms can withstand the intense heat of summer the best. In the Valley of the Sun, no other type of grass will have a chance of surviving the months of June, July, and August. However, that lovely, lush lawn turns a thorny golden brown in October or November when the temperature drops. The benefit is that you are excused from having to mow for a few months. However, the appearance is unquestionably a drawback.

Whether Or Not To Scale

Scalping down the Bermuda and overseeding with ryegrass seed will help a crispy brown lawn survive the winter. The trick is removing enough Bermuda to let the rye seed penetrate the soil and germinate before it becomes a banquet item for the neighbourhood birds. While lawn after lawn is scalped to the ground and winter seed is sown, neighbourhoods are shrouded in a cloud of tan dust for weeks at a time. Tiny sprigs of that emerald green rye start to emerge after a few weeks of tender loving care and numerous brief watering cycles. Homeowners will soon be able to enjoy a beautiful green landscape once more as they gaze out the window or pull into the driveway.

A Winter Lawn's Real Cost

Although this expanse of unmanaged grass is lovely, is it worth the effort and money required to keep it lush and green?

You often factor in the additional cost from your landscaper for the scalping and seed installation when estimating the cost of overseeding your grass. Depending on the size of your lawn, that may cost several hundred dollars or perhaps more. But that is only the start of the price to maintain green lawn in the winter.

There are expenses associated with feeding and watering a young, developing grass. Regarding irrigation, each 1,000 square feet of winter grass will require around 8,000 gallons of water for the duration of its growing season. As a result, your 2,500 square feet of grass will require close to 20,000 gallons of paid water. Don't forget to factor in the price of a bag or two of fertiliser to maintain the ideal shade of vibrant green on your lawn.

Water is an extremely scarce natural resource where we live in the desert. Does the 20,000 to 30,000 gallons of water this panel of natural grass will need in one season make financial and environmental sense?
