Assisted pumping of blood from the lower chambers of the heart by Ventricular Assist Devices

A ventricular assist device, or VAD, is a mechanical pump used to support heart function and blood flow in people with weak or failing hearts. The device is implanted in the body and circulates blood from the heart's lower chambers to the rest of the body. A VAD can help your heart temporarily or permanently.

All Ventricular Assist Devices are made up of several parts. A small tube connects to the heart and transports blood to the pump, which can be worn outside the body or implanted in the abdomen or chest. Another tube returns blood from the pump to your aorta, the body's main artery. There is also a control system and a battery pack that are worn outside.
