Australia have made a significant change to their squad ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh, dropping opener Jake Weatherald and recalling Matt Renshaw after their stunning nine-wicket defeat in Darwin. The decision comes as Australia look to bounce back and level the two-match series in Mackay.
Jake Weatherald Dropped After Poor First Test
The decision to leave out 31-year-old Jake Weatherald was largely influenced by his disappointing performance in the first Test. The Australian opener scored 23 in the first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second, as Bangladesh completed a historic nine-wicket victory.
Weatherald had already been under pressure following an inconsistent start to his Test career. His six-Test record currently includes an average of just 20.36, and the latest failure has prompted Australian selectors to make an immediate change at the top of the order.

Matt Renshaw has been recalled to Australia's 13-man squad and is now the leading candidate to open alongside Travis Head in the second Test. The 30-year-old left-hander last played Test cricket in 2023 and has been working his way back into contention through strong domestic performances.
Renshaw's Sheffield Shield form has strengthened his case considerably. He scored 499 runs at an average of 49.90 during the recent season, giving selectors confidence that he can provide greater stability at the top of the Australian batting order.
His return also gives Australia a different batting option against a Bangladesh attack that exposed weaknesses in the Australian top order during the first Test.
Marnus Labuschagne Retains His Place
Interestingly, Marnus Labuschagne has survived the selection shake-up despite another disappointing performance. He scored only 1 and 31 in Darwin and remains under significant pressure to produce substantial runs.
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has indicated that Labuschagne needs to deliver, making the second Test an important opportunity for the experienced batter to regain confidence.
