Common University Entrance Test (CUET), is a competitive exam conducted by National Testing Agency for admissions throughout India, for undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, integrated research programs, and certification courses by central and many other universities.
CUET is actually a successor to the CUCET (Central University Common Entrance Test) which was conducted by the Central University of Rajasthan for 12 central universities.
As a result of the National Education Policy 2020, CUET was introduced in 2022 as a revised version of CUCET. All 43 central universities are now mandated to adopt this new entrance test.
NEED FOR CUET
What was the need for CUET? Why is it important?
Some of the reasons are listed below –
1. Equal Opportunity to every student – Before 2022 admissions to universities were conducted on the basis of weightage of class 12 marks. This restricted some students from getting admission into their preferred universities. CUET eliminates this issue, thereby giving every student an equal chance through a common test.
2. Elimination of subjective bias – Before the introduction of CUET if a student wanted to choose political science in university, he had to score well in all other subjects too in class 12. CUET enables him to give a domain-specific exam and get the desired subject in university.
3. End to Cut-off system – CUET will put an end to the chaos of the cut-off system. Students will now be able to get admission to their preferred university by giving a common test along with weightage to class 12 marks ( class 12 weightage if there is a tie in CUET score). This will create a fair mechanism for college admissions for students.
CUET Course
CUET offers the whole syllabus and curriculum for the exam. The CUET course syllabus varies depending on the course a candidate is applying for. Generally, the syllabus for undergraduate courses includes topics from the 10+2 level in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and English. For postgraduate courses, the syllabus includes topics from the candidate's graduation-level subjects.
