Beyond Transmission Towers: What Vadodara's Manufacturing Companies Actually Build

Say "Vadodara" and most people picture a refinery and a load of transmission towers. Both are real. But that barely scratches the surface of what this city makes.

Drive past Maneja and you'll get it. In the space of a few kilometres you go by a transformer plant, a bearing factory, and a place building metro train coaches. The range of manufacturing companies in Vadodara is a bit wild once you start looking.
Let me give you the quick tour.
“Power gear is the big one.” ABB's Maneja campus has been making switchgear and grid equipment for decades. Siemens does turbines and switchgear close by. Voltamp builds transformers, and so does TBEA's plant out at Savli. A transmission tower might be the part you see from the road, but the transformers and switchgear it actually feeds? Mostly built right here.

Then there's trains. That metro coach you rode in Delhi or Mumbai? Possibly made in a shed off the Savli highway. Alstom- the old Bombardier plant- builds full metro cars there and even ships them as far as Australia. Not what you'd expect from a Gujarat industrial town.

“And the heavy stuff.” L&T's Vadodara works turns out giant pressure vessels and reactors- the hardware that ends up deep inside refineries and power plants, rolling out on trailers so big they move at walking pace behind a police escort.

There's plenty more. The Koyali refinery feeds a whole plastics-and-chemicals economy. GSFC and GACL make fertilizers. Alembic has made medicines here for over a century, with tyres and cars running off the line just up the road at Halol. Here's the bit that ties back to those towers, though. A lot of Vadodara firms started in steel fabrication and simply kept adding to the list. Take KP Green Engineering, out at Dabhasa — known as a transmission tower maker, sure, but look at the actual range and you'll find solar mounting structures, substation and switchyard frames, cable trays, crash barriers, even pre-engineered buildings. Towers were just where they started.

So what does Vadodara really build? Power for cities, trains for metros, the guts of refineries, and a thousand steel parts holding it all together. Towers are just the easiest piece to spot.

If you ever need something fabricated or engineered, this is one of those places where there's probably a workshop two streets over already making it.
