The Most Common Causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain

Here are 5 lower-back problems that are most likely to be responsible for sciatica you are feeling.

1.Degenerative Disc Disease

As you get older the discs in your spine become more prone to degeneration. This is actually not a disease, but a symptom of aging. Disc degeneration can irritate the root of a nerve and lead to sciatica. It occurs when a weakened disc exposes inflammatory proteins that irritate the nerve area.

2.Lower- Back Herniated Disc

A herniated disc (also called a “slipped disc” or “bulging disc”) happens when the soft inside of the disc herniates or leaks through the outer core and irritates the nerve root. Generally, this is also more likely with aging, as your spinal disc because more susceptible to tearing and damage. Sometimes an action as simple as a twist or the lifting of an object can lead to this.

3.Isthmic Spondylolisthesis

Isthmic spondylolisthesis happens when one vertebral body slips forward onto another vertebral body. This can in some cases pinch the sciatic nerve and therefore cause sciatic nerve pain.

4. Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

The condition is a common cause of sciatic nerve pain among adults over the age of 60 years old. It causes sciatica because of a spinal canal narrowing. It is usually caused by soft tissue overgrowth, bulging disc enlarged facet joints or a combination of these symptoms.

5.Piriformis Syndrome

In some cases, the Piriformis muscle will pinch or irritate the sciatic nerve which runs under it. Although this is not considered to be actual Sciatica as medically defined, it is one of the causes of sciatic nerve pain.

Other Causes Of Sciatica

Besides the above other causes of sciatic nerve pain may include pregnancy, scar tissue compression, a spinal tumor, infection, and even muscle strain.
