Nothing is good or bad our thinking makes it so

“There in nothing good or bad but our thinking makes it so.” This quote is by William Shakespeare from his famous play Hamlet.

Let me begin by writing a short story by Shiv Khera.

There was a man who made his living by selling balloons at a fair. He had all colours of balloons including red, yellow, blue and green. Whenever his business was slow, he would release a helium filled balloon into the air and when the children saw it go up, they would come op to him, buy a balloon and his sales would go up again. He continued this process all day. One day he felt someone tugging at his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked

“If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?”

Moved by the boys concern, the man replied with empathy,

“Son it is not the colour of the balloon, it is what is inside the balloon that makes it go up”

The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that counts. The thing inside that makes us go up is our attitude. There is nothing right or wrong, good or bad, only our values determine whether or not we think a certain action is good or bad.

Hitler murdered six million Jews. Saddam Husssain killed numerous people like Kurds and Shia. Most people find their action terrible. But in their perspective what they did was not bad. Not everyone in the world thinks the same way, someone can think something is immoral while someone else can think something is moral.

Aurangzeb was considered a bad ruler because of certain dictates of discriminatory nature by him. But he didn’t draw any funds from the treasury for his own needs, for which it is said he earned his livelihood by selling his handicrafts. Thus, the persons, things, phenomena etc are judged by different people differently and at different times and in different circumstances. Such variance, while not altering the absolute is reflective of the angle of vision.

When things go right we tend to take the credit. However when things go wrong we tend to blame other factors such as the society, the government, the recession and even God. How ever I believe that these things only effect us to the degree with which we let them, because they can be positive-a spur or negative- a restriction. It is we who decide.

So how real is real?? Consider dreams for example. We all have nightmares which seem perfectly real at the time. We even manifest physical symptoms of fear during them, such as sweating, increased heart rate or even crying. Hypnosis also shows how our reality can be influenced by our thoughts and can be easily fooled. Our reality is entirely at the mercy of how our brain chooses to interpret incoming data.

The sheer magnitude of this incoming information forces the brain to select or we could go crazy. So we consciously see only what we want to see and we hear what we want to hear.

This is aptly illustrated by this small anecdote.

One evening as he was walking along an unlit road, a man stepped on a piece of rope that was lying on the ground. In the semi darkness he mistook the rope for a snake and imagining he had been bitten, he screamed in fear. A friend came running with a torch. In the light the man saw his error and his fears vanished.

Consequently if we want to improve our reality we must start with ourselves, because the only thing in this world over which we have complete control is our self what determines our success is our view point, because we chose how to react with the variables of life. We decide how we interpret the incoming data.  As Shakespeare said nothing is good or bad our thinking makes it so. The key to unlocking your potential to gaining access to that other 95 % of your brain, to all personal success, health and harmony is just to maintain a positive attitude. Like all great discoveries it is disarmingly simple but devastatingly effective. Please believe that once you accept and embrace this concept the world-your world will actually change.

Negative thinking restricts your opinion and pollutes your reality. Positive thinking expands your potential and illuminates your life for the better. Remember what you put out is what you get back. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner thoughts- Your Attitude Decides.

What do you think?
