Case for Flying Flotation Device Concept

A proposal for a flying flotation device was a concept put forth by Mr. Lance Winslow as a way to get flotation devices to drowning victims. It was further developed and modified after the Upstate New York capsizing airstream dealerships of a tour boat that killed 21 people. There was not enough time to get out to those victims and the few boats which came to the immediate rescue could only take about 6-8 people of a total of over 40 people all elderly already in the water.

The flying flotation device would be in shape of a plump model aircraft or small UAV. A life guard at a beach, coast guard or a rescue first responder would fold out the wings, point it in the direction desired, turn it on, set a dial for the approximate distance and then hand launch it. The UAV when turned on would ping the satellite to set the direction of the autopilot and course, then turn on a propeller. The propeller would be in the back of the aircraft and in the front a heat sensor device. The UAV would fly out and find a human temperature heat source closest to a 30-yard diameter of the distance set on the aircraft before launched. If it did not find the victim it would begin circling with an outward spiral until it found the drowning victim in the water. Once the victim was located the propeller would turn off and it would dive into the water.

The aircraft will be lightweight and therefore float. It will be bright orange and easy to see. When the drowning victim grabs it, it will “plumb up” with air from pressurized canisters inside. The drowning victim is safe and it could float up to five people holding onto it. This brilliant idea has been slammed by critics of the lucrative flotation device industry, for fear of losing sales of their current devices. On critic said: “Okay, I'll ask the obvious question: why not just use a jetski? Sheesh… This is what happens when geeks try to be heroes. Do yourself a favor buddy: stick to the video games.” Sincerely Trevor.

Of course in review of the Trevor Types of the world, they must understand that it takes time to get out in the water on a jet ski from a Life Guard booth. The person drowning has most likely already taken in water if rough surf or waves and is chocking and drowning and could slip under the water meaning the Jet Ski when if finally does get there could knock them in the head rather than rescue them. In the chaos of a rescue this is a common occurrence. Sending out a flotation device by air makes sense and the technology already exists and is relatively in expensive. The UAV flying flotation device is easy to build, cheap to make and re-useable.

And…Well, what about many people in a boat on the lake in NY? You cannot get out there fast enough. What about a man over board on an Aircraft Carrier? Cruise Ship cruising at 25 knots, by the time you see and react you are too far away. What about flood victims in New Orleans? What about the 2000 people who just died in Guatemala from Hurricane Stan Remnants, all drowned in a huge flood? Where is the jet ski in those cases; in a tourist rental yard? What if you have to save two people at once? What if your City's lifeguard budget got cut and you have three times the coverage for 1/2 the number of personnel? What about a boat far off in the harbor sinking? What about an oil rig? What if you do not have a jet ski? What if you have four people on a small boat, which just sank? And I do not do video games. Give me a beak.

Dear Trevor and critics from Canada; Why don't you go smoke some pot, AYE? Why are those who sell life preservers, which can only be thrown maybe forty yards, standing in the way of saving lives of people who could be a quarter of a mile away? We must develop technology which solves the problems of mankind, not stand in the way of man's forward progression to maintain an industry's status quo; especially when there are better mouse traps available on the horizon. We must press on and work towards what is best for all concerned. Think on this.
