Taylor Swift’s single “Beautiful Ghosts” is adapted as a movie, Cats, which has got the nomination for the Best Movie Song at the year’s Grammys.
Tom Hooper’s Cats is a musical fantasy movie based on the Tony Award-winning stage play of the same name written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The play itself was a collection of poetry from T. S. Eliot’s book Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. The musical fantasy stars Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, James Corden, Ian McKellen, Francesca Hayward, and Rebel Wilson.
Cats were released on 20 December 2019 by Universal Pictures. The film was criticized by critics and received negative reviews for its plot, CGI effects, and tone of the film. Many critics even called it the worst movie of all time. It was a box office bomb that collected a gross of $75.5 million against a budget of approx $100 million. It is estimated that the distributing studio Universal Pictures has lost over $114 million on the project.
The movie included the original songs, while the team also infused some hip-hop and contemporary elements to the screenplay and songs to give the soundtrack a modernized touch. The musical in the movie featured the fantastic pop star Taylor Swift and was released before the movie’s debut.
Cats’ plot follows a young white cat, Victoria, who is dropped in the street by her owner in the middle of the night. The other cats meet her and introduce themselves as “Jellicles.” The group consists of two queens, Demeter and Cassandra take Victoria under their shed and show her the world of Jellicles. And two toms, Munkustrap and magician Mr. Mistoffelees, the later one develops a crush on Victoria. And the film then explores these cats’ lives.
The film got a terrible response from the audience and held an approval rating of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 314 reviews with an average of 3.69/10.
One of the critics from Variety, Peter Debruge, called the movie the once-in-a-blue-moon embarrassments in the resumes of great actors and tripped the promising newcomers’ opportunities.
Universal Pictures has excellent faith within the Oscar-winning filmmaker Hopper, and the incredible cast joined to the project, but the movie falls flat on its face. It is one of the most financial failures for Universal. However, despite such criticism, Swift’s song from the film, “Beautiful Ghosts” is nominated for the upcoming Grammys.
Recently, Grammys revealed the nomination list of 2021 and “Beautiful Ghosts” from the film Cats featured in the Best Movie Song category. The other songs that are included in the list are “No Time to Die” by Billie Eilish from the James Bond movie of the same name, “Carried You With Me” by Brandi Carlile from Onward, “Into the Unknown” by Idina Menzel from Frozen 2, and “Stand Up” by Cynthia Erivo from Harriet.
Beautiful Ghosts is written by Swift and the creator of the movie Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber. The song depicts a young woman’s sorrow who is wondering if she will ever have glory days. She is longing for belonging and is desperately afraid that she would never have beautiful ghosts of her past days to cling to during her older years. Unlike the film, the song received positive appreciation from critics as well as from the audience. Critics described Swift’s voice as beautiful and filled with a haunting melody longing to be wanted. Apart from the Grammys, Beautiful Ghosts received a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards in the category of Best Original Song.
The nomination in the Grammys is a flawless victory after being criticized for the past one year. However, Cats’ tough competition as Taylor Swift is competing against some mind-blowing singers like Billie Eilish and Idina Menzel. Cats have suffered a lot for its VFX and is tainted by mockery; hopefully, the single washes away some of its bad reputations and serves little appreciation to its plate.
