Introduction: It is crucial to identify the causes and complications of chronic renal disease in dialysis patients. This will improve patients' quality of life. Early detection and prevention can improve the quality of care. Aim: This study examined the causes and complications associated with chronic kidney disease in dialysis patients. Method and Material: All patients who were on peritoneal or hemodialysis at the University Hospital in Heraklion, Crete were included in this study. All dialysis patients who had at least one admission to the renal ward were subjected to an examination on causes of morbidity or hospitalizations. For a period of 33 month, mortality was monitored. A total of 123 patients were examined for renal disease. Data were collected from the patientsbEUR(tm), medical records. The bEURoeStatistical Pack of Social SciencesbEURoe v.17.0 was used to perform statistical analysis. Results: Of the 123 patients suffering from ESRD, 55.3% were males with a mean of 65.3B+-15.2 (range 16-85). The majority (62.6%) of patients were on HD and 37.4% were on PD. Chronic kidney disease can be caused by diabetes (19.5%), followed closely by glomerulonephritis (18.7%). 37.9% of hospitalizations were due to infections, including peritonitis in PD patients (19.1%), central catheter infection (40.4%) and respiratory tract infections (12.8%), 6.4% (6.4%) and other infections (8.5%) Cardiac problems were pulmonary edema (57.1%), faint episodes, myocardial injury (7.1%), and decompensated cardiac failure (7.1%). This study revealed that catheter-related infections and pulmonary embolism were the main causes of hospitalization. These measures include a thorough assessment of the dry body weight and the avoidance of central cats.
