When cellulose is combined with acetic acid and acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid, Cellulose Acetate Fiber, an ester of cellulose, is created. As a biodegradable alternative to plastic, cellulose acetate is used in the production of clothing, photographic films, and other products including cigarette filters.
A form of synthetic fibre known as Cellulose Acetate Fibre is connected to cotton or tree pulp cellulose. Trade names for these acetate fibres include Estron, Acele, Celanese, Avisco, and Chromspun. These synthetic fibres have been phased out in favour of less expensive substitutes like polyester and nylon in recent years. Although cellulose acetate fibre manufacture was originally identified in 1865, commercial production did not begin until 1921.
