When we think beyond our own premises, town and borders, we see how much of the world lives in impoverished conditions where even basic care is a luxury. We need to have a mindset of being resourceful and also being empathetic towards marginalised communities that are dealing with adverse health conditions and diseases. Southern United States is battling from an epidemic of HIV/AIDS. We can do our part by being educated and get HIV training to abolish the societal and internalized stigma against HIV. Many people in the impoverished communities do not consider treatment as an option and focus on prevention instead. This is a mindset that essentially would leave millions of people globally without care, a worldview we should refuse to accept.
Gilead COMPASS Initiative® is an esteemed initiative that is actively working to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Southern United States. They garner Gilead HIV resource by collaborating with local community organizations and stakeholders to use evidence-based solutions to reach out to the ones who are in dire need of proper medical infrastructure and model of care to provide treatment for HIV/AIDS.
They also have partnered with mental health professionals to advocate for mental health services and trauma-informed care for people suffering from HIV. They understand that a person suffering from HIV already has so much to deal with. Along with this, if they would have to face discrimination because of this then it would become extremely difficult for them to deal with it. Therefore, they are working towards reducing the stigma related to HIV/AIDS. They have been able to help several communities by their continuous efforts.
Essentially, they are working actively on the below mentioned areas with their Gilead grants and trainings:
• Capacity Building and Shared Knowledge
• Well-being, Mental Health, Substance Use and Trauma-Informed Care
• Stigma Reduction
• Faith-Based Advocacy and Spiritually Integrated Capacity Building
