The XPERIA Z2 Tablet looks almost identical to its predecessor from afar; It's even lighter yet comes with updated components. Display:
The display rightly dominates the front of this new premium slate. However, Sony was brave in its decision not to increase the pixel density this time around. This is significantly lower than other full-size tablets, such as the Apple iPad Air (264 ppi) and the Samsung Galaxy NotePRO (247 ppi). It is a pleasant viewing experience that rarely blocks its competition. Whether you are streaming an episode of Netflix or watching a blockbuster recently downloaded from the Play Store, video playback is always a pleasure. Deep, rich blacks create a fantastic contrast, and the wider color space helps restore the cinema experience to the big screen in your lap. If you are familiar with the digital equivalent of a DVD box set, the aspect ratio of 16: 9 suddenly makes sense. Sony also positions the XPERIA Z2 Tablet as a gaming device. With the streaming service PlayStation Now it makes sense to offer a smaller widescreen television.
Sound:
To support the improved display, Sony has equipped its latest Slate with two front speakers. The company has called this setup “S-Force” and promises a surround sound experience without a standalone speaker. Although the new speakers were “carefully” placed on the device according to Sony, they were mounted in a terrible position. I suspect that most people like me pick up a tray with both hands to the bottom of the opposite edges. The corners of the device are in the palm, and the thenar – or padded area at the base of the thumb – provides additional support on the top.
If you hold the XPERIA Z2 Tablet this way, both speakers are covered. They will not completely mute the sound, but audiophiles will surely hear the difference. It's a shame because Sony had the right idea here – HTC's BoomSound setup is fantastic and I've been waiting for other manufacturers to follow suit.
