How will an author know which voice narrator or voice over actors will bring life to their storyline? There are a lot of factors that need to be considered when you are thinking about hiring a voice narrator. For example,

  • Tonality
  • Gender
  • Genre
  • Variations etc.

Here are some tips about voice over artists that you can use and consider before hiring them.

  • The speed

The pace of talking is an important factor to be considered. If your storyline is of a horror genre and the story is being narrated at a fast pace, you'll lose the interest of the audience. It is always better that the dubbing voice is recorded at a pace that is a little slow than too fast. There will be various scenes within your storyline that might want the narrator to adapt to a different read.

  • Does it sound natural?

The voice should not match that of a cartoon or a caricature unless the dubbing is done for an animated movie or series. Narration that hints at a character that is speaking rather humanly will be much more preferred than a cartoon character speaking in a real-life movie. Changing the tone with a subtle hint can help the reader keep up with the character. Always ensure that the voice is manageable and sounds natural to the audience.

  • Read the reviews of the narrator

Doing a background check and reviewing the work of the narrator can give you an extra edge to understand if the voice and the tone will suit your adaptation. You can scroll and read reviews from the audience to get a better idea and honest review of the narrator.

  • Trust your instincts

You know your story and your book better than anybody else. Trust your guts as it will know which voice will give and add to the life of the character. If you're unsure, you can seek help from your family and friends to seek their opinion on the adaptation. A decent speaking voice doesn't mean that they are a good narrator. Being a narrator requires skills to perceive and guide your audience in a way that you want to.

  • Consistency

If given a chance to test the narrator’s voice, take that in a jiffy. Consistency is of a key concern when dubbing is done. Any variations in pitch and tone should be mentioned throughout the narration. The story when listened by the audience should feel like it was recorded in one sitting rather than any fluctuations.

However, there are different forms and variations of narrations and choosing the right one depends upon your target audience, your TG or target market, your genre and the kind of response that you are looking to evoke from the audience.
