The average person takes 2,000 steps on average to cover a mile. If you’re on a hiking trail, you’re bound to encounter roots, rocks, and other things along the way. When it’s finally time to set up camp or go back down the trail, you’d have logged a lot more steps. Even if you set out with your feet completely fine, they are sure to be tired when you get back. But did you know the right pair of socks can reduce your discomfort and blisters? If you’re preparing for a trip, here’s what you need to know before you pack socks.

Fit

Fit always matters. When you shop for hiking socks, make sure yours are not too tight or small. That’s also why you shouldn’t buy them in a hurry. When you bring hiking socks, pick pairs that you’ve already worn and tried before. Don’t bring pairs that you’ll be wearing for the first time during the trip. If the fit isn’t good or right, you will be consigning your feet to a few days of misery.

Sock Height

How high should your socks be? It depends on your shoes. If you have hiking boots, you can choose socks with tops that go a little higher than the top of the boots. If you have rubber shoes, crew ankle socks are a good option. These socks work with low-cut footwear. However, if you want to make sure your legs are protected and covered, wear knee-high socks. They keep you protected against abrasion. The socks can also help you stay war, especially if you’ll be camping during the night. Nights get chilly when you’re on a climb, so having knee-high socks is handy.

Padding

Sock cushioning also helps absorb the impact when you walk. That’s especially helpful since you’re exploring hiking trails. Trails aren’t flat like asphalt roads, so you need to exert more force when you walk. That means more pressure for your feet to absorb. Having top-tier hiking boots will help a lot. The boots should have soles thick enough to weather the impact. However, having socks with the proper cushioning is also invaluable. Think of the boots and the socks as shock absorbers. Without them, your feet will be in a world of hurt once you stop for the night. You’ll need a little more planning with this one, though. If you’re bringing socks with heavy cushioning, that will make for a super tight fit with your shoes. The fit may be too tight to be comfortable. You could consider light cushioning or medium cushioning since you can loosen the laces and adjust for a more comfortable fit.

Fabric

Hiking socks are available in different fabrics. You can choose wool if you want something that can regulate your temperature and keep your feet from getting sweaty. It's also ideal if the weather conditions are cold. Polyester is another option. It provides good insulation and wicks away moisture, so it dries quickly. Nylon is durable and has good drying times, silk should be out of the question because it’s not as durable as the others, and spandex helps prevent bunching and wrinkling.
