Chronic medical conditions are, for lack of a better term, extremely unpleasant. They are characterized as chronic because they are more or less permanent conditions that you will have to learn how to cope with. These can come about for any number of reasons, but most commonly, they are a result of genetics. So, to better understand chronic conditions and how they work, this article is going to take a brief look at some of the most common chronic conditions.

Dysphagia

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. This is a condition that can range in its severity, although it is often improved with the right application of treatment. This improvement can sometimes lead to complete recovery, although that isn’t always possible, and sometimes all treatment can do is improve the condition.

Treatments. Some of the most common treatments for dysphagia include speech therapy, thickeners, and surgery. Thickeners are likely the fastest way to find results and the least likely to aid in recovery from the condition. Products such as SimplyThick food thickener allow you to thicken drinks and liquid foods so that they are easier to swallow. On the other hand, speech therapy teaches you to manipulate your mouth so that you can swallow properly, and surgery can widen your esophagus to help relieve dysphagia. When combined with a good thickener, either could yield strong results.

Asthma

Asthma is a widely known medical condition that affects your breathing. It can affect people of all ages, and while it more commonly develops in childhood, it can also develop for the first time during adulthood. The most recognizable symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath and tightness in your chest, as well as wheezing when you breathe. However, you can also experience episodes where your symptoms worsen dramatically; this is known as an asthma attack.

Treatments. There is currently no cure for asthma, making it a chronic condition; however, several easily applied treatments can help manage the condition. The most common asthma treatment takes the form of inhalers, which are small devices that allow you to breathe medicine. There are two kinds of inhalers. The first are reliever inhalers, which are used to quickly relieve asthma symptoms but for a short time. The second is preventative inhalers; these are used every day to prevent the symptoms of asthma.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Medical fatigue is different from feeling simply tired. Those who suffer from fatigue will feel physically exhausted constantly and will not stop feeling tired and run down, even after resting. Often, they will take a long time to recover from physical activity and have significant issues with sleeping. They can have problems with concentration and memory, and often they will suffer from pains such as sore throat, headaches, muscle pain, feeling sick, or even flu-like symptoms.

Treatments. Typically, treatment for Chronic fatigue involves reducing pain through pain killers and learning how to properly manage the energy that you do have. However, there have been suggestions that cognitive-behavioral therapy could also yield promising results.
