To reserve specific licenses for a device, you need to first generate a request code from the device. Then, enter the request code in Cisco SSM along with the required licenses and their quantity, and copy the generated authorization code into the device within the CLI command. After this procedure, all specific features that are included in your license would be activated on the device.

Please note that functionality to certain smart licensing features such as transfer of licenses between products, license usage, asset management and etc., might not working with Cisco SLR licenses.

Most newly introduced Cisco devices supports SLR Cisco licensing. You can find these devices in the following list from Cisco License:

  • Cisco Integrated Services Router 1000 (From IOS version 16.11.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco Catalyst 3650 (From IOS version 16.9.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco Catalyst 3850 (From IOS version 16.9.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco Catalyst 9000 (From IOS version 16.9.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco Integration Services Routers 1000 (From IOS version 16.12.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco Integration Services Routers 4000 (From IOS version 16.12.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco CSR1000v (From IOS version 16.11.1 to 17.3.2)
  • Cisco WebEx Meeting Server
  • Firepower Management Center and Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense
  • Firepower 1010/2100 on FTD (From version 6.3)
  • Unified Communications Manager (CUCM)
  • Cisco Secure Network Analytics (formerly StealthWatch)

Note: From IOS XE 17.3.2, Cisco has replaced Smart licensing with Cisco Smart License Usage Policy and specific license reservation would not be supported. Although, SLR licenses enforced on prior versions are still being honored.

In order to install these licenses, customers need to generate a request code from their devices and reserve a specific license in the Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM). After that, the generated Authorization Code should be installed on the device.

Finally, Specified License Reservations can be used by any customer and on any smart account once Cisco approves them. Although, to avoid this, customers can use Permanent Licenses Reservation or Cisco PLR licenses which requires no approval from Cisco. Plus, it can register all product instances permanently and with full capabilities.
