Climate change has emerged as one of the biggest crises facing our planet today. We are seeing the effects play out in increasing intensity as time passes. Coral reefs are dying because of ocean acidification and untameable wildfires burn in Australia and California.

While action from governments and large corporations is necessary, we as individuals can also make a difference with some simple lifestyle changes. In this post, we are sharing some habits you can quit helping lower your carbon footprint.

  1. Non-renewable energy

Non-renewable energy is generated by burning fossil fuels. This adds greenhouse gases to the atmosphere which in turn causes global warming. To lower your carbon footprint, switch to a greener alternative or companies that support green projects.

If you’re in the market for a better energy provider, check out AGL electricity plans. AGL Energy offers Green Choice plans that allow you to substitute part or all of your energy with green alternatives.

  1. Bottled water and other single-use plastics

Purchasing water in a plastic bottle is wasteful. Single-use plastics pollute our oceans, add to landfill and take 1,000 years to decompose. Avoid creating unnecessary waste and invest in a water filter and reusable water bottles. Avoid plastic straws and coffee cups.

  1. Long showers

Long and hot showers are relaxing, however they are drive up your energy consumption. Take shorter or cold showers or consider having a bath.

  1. Inefficient lighting fixtures

CFLs and incandescent lights consume more energy than LEDs. Replace inefficient lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs for sustainability and energy savings.

  1. Meat & dairy

In comparison to vegetables and fruits, the production of meat and dairy products requires a higher amount of water and crops. Consider cutting out meat and dairy once a week, and familiarise yourself with tasty vegetarian dishes.

  1. Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is one of the biggest polluting industries. Not only do manufacturers use unsustainable materials but they are notorious for unethical manufacturing practices like child labour.

If you can’t afford sustainable fashion brands, consider buying pre-owned clothes. Thrift shopping is a great way to enjoy eco-friendly fashion at discounted prices.

  1. Leaving vampire appliances plugged in

Appliances tend to consume energy despite being turned off. Unplug these appliances to prevent them from wasting electricity. Install a smart power strip to control your electricity consumption.

  1. Regular laundry loads

Running the washing machine with a half load wastes water and energy. Wait until there is enough laundry to put on a full load of washing.

  1. Disposable menstrual products

The average person that gets a period spends $9379.73 on menstrual products during their reproductive life. Not only are these products expensive, but they are made from a combination of plastic and cotton and take a long time to decompose. Explore greener alternatives such as menstrual cups and period underwear to improve your sustainability.

  1. Harsh cleaning products

Household cleaning products are made with toxic chemicals that pollute water bodies and harm marine wildlife. Look for eco-friendly options or consider making your own cleaning products from items in your pantry like bicarbonate soda.
