Delhi, the capital city of India is the one of the most common entry points when landing in the country. People prefer to be in Delhi as it  has something to offer for every one, it has a rich cultural heritage to offer for travelers on one hand and is a buracatic  & corporate hub for others.

There are awe inspiring  monuments that have a rich history supporting their existence in Delhi like Red Fort, Parliament House area, India Gate, Safdarjung Tomb (read our earlier post about it here), Humanyun Tomb and many more. While from bureaucratic point of view  almost all major offices of Government of India & foreign embassies are present here.

Delhi along with its adjoining cities like Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad & Faridabad is also the hub where many national and international companies have their corporate offices in place. However, off lately, Delhi NCR started to be the talking point when the air pollution index of Delhi was at an alarming level.  Not only this even noise pollution level on a daily basis crosses the hazardous limit here.

Taking cues from this red marked report card of Delhi NCR region both Government & private companies have come forward to bring in a positive sustainable change. Such that the region  has a healthier air to breathe, lesser noise level and more.

Here are a few initiatives that have been brought into practice for a sustainable improvement  in the environment  of Delhi NCR at large:

#1. S.C. Ruling Banning the Sales of Fire Crackers in Delhi:

During the Diwali time burning fire crackers is a part of the celebratory customs. But as people start overdoing it to show off their prosperity, the happy custom becomes a menace. The pollution levels elevate exponentially on all five days of Diwali thereby causing a smoke cloud  with suffocating air that not only humans but even animals are forced to breathe. Without a doubt breathing problems , eye irritations etc. happen apart from fire accidents and injuries. Thank fully this year, just before  Diwali festival honorable Supreme Court passed a ruling which prohibited selling of fire crackers in Delhi till November 1, 2017.

#2. Vodafone Super Crackers

Moved by the SC ruling, Vodafone decided to encourage and do its bit in making this Diwali for its users a ‘green’ – one that is healthy yet happy. As a part of this unique campaign all Vodafone stores had Super Crackers from 16th-19th October 2017. The ‘Super Crackers’ had seeds of Soyabean, Tulsi and other air purifying plants packed in a water soluble paper bag. The consumers just needed to plant those seeds and nurture to have a prosperous green Diwali.

#3. New Underpasses & Flyovers for a Smoother & Less Polluted Drive

The drive from and to Gurgaon especially in context of Delhi was known to be in a dreaded state which required attention from long. Traffic congestion was not only affecting the overall commuting time, but also adding on to the stress level of commuters. This congestion was further contributing to air pollution. This is when Government of Haryana and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) teamed up to plan and execute set of underpasses and flyovers across Gurgaon. Some of them are already open for commoners and the drive from key traffic areas like on Golf Course Road and near Vodafone Belvedere Towers metro station while coming from Delhi has now become a delightful happy ride. Similarly areas near Iffco Chowk, Rajeev Chowk and Sohna Road are also under transformation stage.

#4. Super Smart Bus Shelters Made by Vodafone

Buses are a major form of public transport in Delhi NCR.  Vodafone created Wi-Fi bus shelter in Gurgaon near Huda City Metro Sation where public can access free internet service for 20 minutes flat irrespective of the fact that the person is a Vodafone customer or not. The company has plans to introduce few more such shelters and also Wi-Fi Hotspot across 115 locations across Delhi NCR especially near hospitals, markets etc.

Apart from this Vodafone has also created first of its kind state of art air-purifying bus shelter like the one near Safdarjung Hospital. This shelter has plastic curtains and has two grids of LEDs – displaying the level of pollution outside and inside the bus shelter. A great initiative indeed!

#5. Government Set to introduce 10,000 Electric Vehicles in Delhi NCR Region

As a mega shift to 100% Electric Vehicles for controlling air pollution , Indian Government is rapidly in process of finalizing and introducing 10000 three wheeler EVs with 4000 charging stations.  Post that electrically operating buses are also being planned.

These initiatives are raising a hope for a  better, healthier and smart Delhi NCR region. As they say ‘Positive Vibes’ only.
