It is a widely known fact that there is something powerful about watching films that are based on real-life inspiration. It is somewhere more mind-boggling, inspiring or even infuriating at the same time. Every time you watch a film that ends with “based on a true story” written on your screen, the very next thing you do is frantically search about it. Here are some must-watch movies based on true stories.

The Imitation Game (2014)

The Imitation Game is about a British mathematician and logician, Alan Turing who made significant contributions towards ending the Second World War through his cryptanalysis and computer skills. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing along with Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, and Mark Strong.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

This biographical crime film is directed and produced by the exemplar, Steven Spielberg. The star cast is also stellar with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken.

The story is about a con man Frank Abagnale Jr. who forged millions of dollars in the late teen while acting as a doctor, a pilot and an attorney. After a couple of years, he is tracked down in France and then jailed. While serving his jail term, he is given a condition by the Federal Government that he would be released if he helped them investigate crimes. The film was a critical and commercial success.

Schindler’s List (1993)

Schindler’s List is considered one of the best films of all time. Steven Spielberg has made nothing less than a perfect film with this directorial venture.

The film is about an opportunist businessman, Oskar Schindler who turns into humanitarian and saves the lives of more than a thousand Polish Jews from being gassed at the Nazi concentration camp.

The film received high accolades along with a number of awards including the prestigious Academy Awards.

A Beautiful Mind (2001)

The story is about a mathematical genius, John Nash, who makes worthwhile contributions at Princeton University until he makes a revolutionary contribution that earned him the Nobel Prize. He helps the government in breaking Soviet codes which involves him in a conspiracy plot. These events make him more and more paranoid, and after years of this struggle, he triumphs over the tragedy.

The Pianist (2002)

The Pianist is a story about a Polish Jewish magician who struggles to survive the destruction of the Second World War. Wladyslaw Szpilman is forced into the Warsaw ghetto and later separated from his family during Operation Reinhard. He tries to hide and save himself among the ruins of Warsaw.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Picture. It also received other prestigious awards including BAFTA.

12 Years A Slave (2013)

The film is about a free African American from upstate New York who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. He remains under slavery where he is tortured and forced into inhuman hardships. But After 12 years he meets a Canadian abolitionist Bass who promises to send his letter to his family which changes his life.

The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt. It was named as the best of 2013 by various critics and media houses. It also won three Academy Awards out of nine nominations.

Compelling storylines feel great to watch, but it is distinctively satisfying to watch films that have been inspired by true incidents. You tend me more interested even in the smallest of the facts and what makes it special is that you also get to learn through these captivating tales.
