We keep hearing this phrase from time to time ” get good marks and you will be set for life”

Right?

But why don't I see the academically bright people having a good quality of life? Well success is defined by the quality of life right? And marks don't really fetch us that, does it?

A friend of mine who is very bright academically recently asked me “ Why am I not happy even though I do well at school? I am supposed to be successful and good right? That’s what everyone told me”

Well, two things to clarify:

  • Success and happiness is not the same thing

  • Getting good marks doesn’t even guarantee success. It definitely wouldn’t guarantee happiness

If anything focusing too much on studies can break the balance one needs in life and probably makes them sad and weird.

Now don't mistake me, I really do believe that one needs to train their brains and educate themselves properly in the field of their interest. This article is not about “not studying”. This article is about realizing ” Marks is overrated and is not going to get you what you really want in life”.

Let's define personal happiness and you'll understand why marks are overrated:

Now happiness could mean different things to different people and it makes sense. Based on the way we grew up everyone would seek things that they don't have right?

But we can narrow it down to 3-4 important aspects/pillars in life

HEALTH :

Now it doesn't matter if you are a gold medalist in an ivy League college if you don't have proper health. Right?

Because the quality of life you would be having would be awful. One would get so many problems in their body and would probably be very hard to be normal.

So physical and mental health is very essential when it comes to having a good quality of life and I guess this is something that everyone knows but still ignores!

WEALTH/CAREER:

Now, getting a good mark could come in handy with your job interviews but then again, the higher you climb up the ladder of the companies, the more stress, and more responsibilities would be put on you. Right?

So, when you are in the rat's race, you get more money to handle more stress. But the ones who actually have a great quality of life are the smart people who figure out a way to get passive income or create multiple streams of income.

Again, nowhere in our education system did we learn about entrepreneurship or the latest trends on investing or actually any sort of financial education right?

SOCIAL LIFE/LOVE AND CONNECTIVITY:

Now there’s a new trend where people are seeking ways to be happy alone. While loving yourself and actually being comfortable and happy being alone is different from trying to isolate oneself and expect to be happy.

The thing is: We humans are social beings. We need people one way or another. Rather than saying people we need to say “good friends who we can rely on”

HAVING PASSION:

Now passion is something that’s totally not money oriented. Something that you can and would do all day if money wasn’t a thing. Studying cannot and should not be a passion for any sane human being.

It could be a sport or music, travel, biking, talking! Anything. I once heard a guy saying writing GRE and TOEFL is his passion. People like that are there in this world!

So you see how personal happiness has nothing much to do with academic success?
