The blog is relevant for all people who are using smart plugs currently. As you might already know that cyber attackers are always looking for different ways to bypass cybersecurity mechanisms to gain access to your confidential data and information, and this time around, they have taken the route of smart plugs to get into your home networks and negligent use of smart plugs could lead your home network to be vulnerable and exposed to serious cyber threats.

As per the recent reports, the smart plug users need to be attentive because a study has shown that cyber attackers are nowadays taking the help of smart plug to enter the secure and encrypted home network of the user.

If you wish to buy a smart plug, you can head over to the Amazon store where you can buy Amazon smart plug at a reasonable price with the device being compatible with Alexa voice assistant and other Amazon Echo speakers. However, you must proceed to read this blog first because Amazon smart plug could potentially pose a security threat to your home network.

A recent report has been published by a well-known site, “Tech Radar,” which suggests that a smart plug (especially of low price and unreliable brand) can be made extremely vulnerable to cyber-attack by malicious sources. If the cyber attackers are skilled enough, they can look for the vulnerable point and use the exploit to enter into the encrypted home network of the users.

And, once they are inside, they can easily carry out their intention, whether it is to steal or delete any data or install programs to corrupt the system entirely.

The new alarm has been raised by a blog post penned by an author named “A&O IT,” which is a group of antivirus experts who figured that if the hacker is turned out to be skilled enough, he can make the smart plug look very vulnerable. They published their research on the Techradar site along with naming some of the equipment they tested to verify their theory, which included smart plugs like Sonoff S 26 and Ener-J WiFi, and both of them are extremely affordable and accessible (available on Amazon store).

The cyber test done by A&O IT concluded that if the cyber attackers choose to use an appropriate program, they can easily obtain access into the home network of users, thereby attacking the system with a myriad of exploits.

The group revealed that they employed specific kinds of software and used smart plugs, and within some moments, they got access to private areas of the network such as SSID and PSK. And, once the group got their hands on confidential information such as passwords and other credentials, the entire home network laid bare in front of them, exposing every bit of sensitive information which they could easily exfiltrate.

So, to solve this issue, first of all, you should refrain from using any kind of cheap smart plug model. And even if you are so keen on using smart plugs, you should only prefer to use reliable and touch expensive smart plugs such as Amazon smart plugs, which can at least give you a sense of security that comes with the brand’s name associated with the product. However, it must be stated that if the vulnerabilities have been and exploits are already there, then it is a matter of time before the cyber attackers turn their attention towards higher-end products.

Nevertheless, security concerns related to gadgets like smart plugs have existed for some time now, and up until now, only smaller end products have been targeted.
