Muslims say Bismillah before starting any action or deed. It means ‘In the name of Allah,’ and the purpose of saying it is to gain Allah’s blessings alongside remembering Allah. Benefits and Virtues of Bismillah also help us become better Muslims because it continually reminds us of Allah’s blessings and favor. The Prophet (PBUH) warned us against neglecting it, saying that any deed we do without Allah’s remembrance lessens in value.
There are many occasions when Muslims say Bismillah. Some of them are upon the directions of the Prophet (PBUH) and following the sunnah, while others are general.
- The Prophet (PBUH) told us to say it before eating and provided an alternative dua for when we forget. This is a way of attaining Allah’s blessings for the food.
- We must say Bismillah before entering our houses. The Prophet (PBUH) outlined how Satan enters the home of a person who doesn’t do so.
- Saying it before marital relations is important. It serves as a form of protection if a child is born out of that relationship.
- The Prophet (PBUH) told us about various duas that include Bismillah. Many of these are for recital after the daily prayers.
- It is sunnah to say Bismillah before performing wudu. Some people even believe that it is obligatory, but that is a minority opinion.
- Anyone who slaughters an animal must say Bismillah during the act. If you see any butcher in action in Muslim countries, you will notice them doing that.
Saying Bismillah is highly recommended for Muslims, and it’s one of the marks of Islam. Muslims all over the world continuously recite it. We must do it to remember Allah and be thankful to Him.
