Artificial light – Invented to eliminate the darkness away. Light has both positive and negative side.

Let’s first talk about its positive impact:

It can change our mood positively, boost energy and also regulate our circadian rhythm, that is related to our sleep pattern and natural wakefulness.

Negative impact of light:

Not every light is good for our eyes. Overexposure to light at the wrong time can be harmful, especially if it’s blue light. This light is emitted from smartphones, laptops, computers and other such digital devices. If you constantly get exposed to this light, it can cause fatigue and upset our natural rhythms.

What is blue light?

Sunlight is made up of 7 colours – Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. Each ray has different energy and wavelength. Red has a longer wavelength and less energy while blue-ray has a shorter wavelength and more energy. Among this complete spectrum of the rainbow, blue light waves aids in keeping our body and mind alert.

Though the blue light emitted from digital devices is only a fraction of the light emitted from the sun still it is dangerous since we come in direct contact with this artificial blue light and spend more time using these devices. More than anything else our eyes are getting affected the most.

Common eye problems due to blue light:

  • Digital eyestrain

  • Increased risk of age-related macular degeneration

  • Blurred vision

  • Red eyes

So what can be done to protect our eyes?

The solution – Blue Light Glasses:

Blue light glasses or computer glasses are designed with a special filter to control the harmful effect by absorbing blue light emitted from devices that eventually risk your eyes.

If you spend a prolonged time on your smartphones or in front of the computer, it is wise to embrace your eyes with blue light glasses and reduce eye strain. Blue light glasses also claim to reduce the risk of cataracts and other macular degeneration conditions.

When to wear blue light glasses:

As already said before, digital devices are the main source of blue light that affects your eyes. So, whenever you come in contact with the digital device it is better to wear blue light glasses.

Mostly while

  • Working on computers

  • Binge-watching on laptop/mobile phone

  • Using constant smartphones for playing games, chatting (especially before going to bed)

  • Performing some work on any digital device that requires a lot of focus

  • Even while watching TV, you can wear blue light glasses

Can I wear blue light glasses all the time?

Not necessary, since it designed to solely protect your eyes from digital devices. However, if your prescription glasses have blue block, you might have to wear all the time but if it’s non-prescription glasses, then you can use only while your eyes come in contact with a digital device.

Whether you shop for eyeglasses online or from any local store, you can get a blue light filter layered on your lens.

So, if you spend significant screen time, it is always wise to wear blue light glasses/computer glasses. You can also consult an eye doctor for any advice.
