Recently, BMW Malaysia released the BMW X5 PHEV, which starts at RM440,745 (excluding SST). Meanwhile, Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus is priced at RM 391,150 (excluding SST).

We haven't got the X5 yet, so we won't enter the driving impression. On the contrary, we will learn from the specifications of BMW X5 xDrive45e and Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus.

Power system

Under the hood of BMW X5 xDrive45e, a 3.0-liter B58 turbocharged inline six-cylinder gasoline engine is mounted, which can output 286 PS in the speed range of 5000 to 6000 rpm and 450 Nm in the speed range of 1500 to 3500 rpm.

The engine is matched with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is also equipped with an electric motor with output power of 113 PS and 265 Nm, which makes the comprehensive output power of the system reach 394 PS and 600 Nm. It is said that the cruising range of electric vehicles can reach 87 kilometers.

On XC90 T8, a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine powered the front wheels, with an output of 320 PS/400 Nm. At the rear axle, there is a motor, which provides power of 87 PS/240 Nm, and the comprehensive output power is 407 PS/640 Nm. Volvo claims that the cruising range of pure electric vehicles can reach 50 kilometers.

Considering the ride comfort of the straight six engine, we expect the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid system to be more perfect.

Appearance aspect

The two cars are quite close in appearance and size, only a centimeter apart.

However, BMW X5 xDrive45e weighs 160 kg more than XC90 T8. This may be because X5′ s battery (24 kWh) is much larger than XC90′ s (11.6 kWh). Not to mention a bigger engine.

Both adopt 20-inch wheels, but X5 has a staggered arrangement, namely, the rear wheel is wider than the front wheel, with the rear wheel measuring 305/40 R20 and the front wheel measuring 275/45 R20. XC90 wears 275/45 R20 in every corner.

Interior

In Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus, the seats are decorated with Nappa leather, the instrument panel and door panel are covered with leather and decorated with matt wood.

The Plus model is equipped with a 1400 watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 19 speakers. The last finishing touch is Orrefors Crystal File.

On X5 xDrive45e, it is also decorated with wood, but it is treated with bright surface. The infotainment screen is horizontal, with a size of 12.3 inches, which is also the size of the digital instrument display screen.

It is equipped with a 464-watt Harmon Kardon sound system with 14 speakers, and the rear seat entertainment system uses dual 10.2-inch touch screens.

Advanced driver assistance system

BMW X5 xDrive45e is equipped with driver assistance package, which is bundled with AEB, LDW, RCTA and blind spot monitoring. There is no adaptive cruise control and low speed following.

Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus is equipped with a full set of IntelliSafe, including AEB, LKA, CTA, BLIS, Coming Lane Mitigation and Run-off road Mitigation.

There is also Pilot Assist, which can give steering assistance from standstill to 140 km/h from 0-200 km/h (that is, before the speed limit of 180 km/h is implemented).

At this point, the fast running between BMW X5 xDrive45e and Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus is over. From the specification table alone, XC90 has the upper hand, especially ADAS is more comprehensive and the price is lower.

But compared with BMW X5 Malaysia, its driving and riding experience may be another story. As usual, we suggest to test these two cars before making a decision between them.
