In order to lead a trouble-free life, advancing age carries with its widespread eye disorders that must be taken care of. Too much we do in our day, after all, requires the use of our super practical eyes! So what are those prevalent eye diseases in Sri Lanka that can make life rough for us? And should we prevent any of them? Well, all these common eye disorders should not be prevented entirely, so you can become more conscious of their symptoms, causes, forms, prevention, and treatment. Hence, we urge you to consult one of the experienced opticians in Sri Lanka

AMD (Age-related macular Degeneration)

The core component of your retina is the macula (the back layer of the eye that sends the brain visual signals). Your ability to see declines as it wears with advancing age and the macula is what makes you see, learn and perform every visual activity. The disorder is known as age-related macular degeneration.

The symptoms of this disease include; blurry vision, distorted points in the center of what you see, and a distorted sense of hue.

The condition is termed dry macular degeneration as it is in the early stage. You get to see yellow spots gathering in your macula and around it during this.

There is a point where blood vessels start to expand beneath your macula as the damage begins to happen. They leak blood onto the retina, destroying the photoreceptors you see on it.

One of the predominantly inherited eye disorders is AMD. If you have a family member that has suffered from macular degeneration, so you're more likely to experience it, too. The risk of developing this disorder is also raised by smoking, elevated blood pressure, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

There are some drugs that can delay the degeneration process, but there is no proper treatment for AMD. Thus, moving vision loss farther into the future.

A proper diet rich in nutrients could help avoid the incidence of macular degeneration in the first place. Any reports indicate that omega-3 fatty acids contribute to reducing the chance of developing AMD.

Often, aim to add to your daily diet health-friendly nutrients such as zinc and vitamin A and stop your battle with this eye disease.

Cataracts

To help us have a clear vision, our natural lens is normally clear. Yet cataracts are a disease in which the lens becomes cloudy, and only unclear and blurred images can be seen. Why is this happening? Oh, in our eyes, the protein continues to clump and form clouds that hamper our vision.

The risk of this disorder grows with age. So, it's important to check for their symptoms. If you have cataracts, doing this would make for better diagnosis and care.

Blurred vision, sensitivity to light, double vision (seeing two images of the same object), faded colors, and dizziness are some symptoms. Wondering what contributes to the protein clumping and, thus, the cloudiness? Yeah, there are different reasons. Trauma, diabetes, prolonged exposure to the sun, food deficiencies, and radiation therapy, for example.

You will have to go through several exams for the diagnosis, including the refraction test. And if diagnosed, surgery would have to be performed to replace a fresh and artificial one with the original yet cloudy eye lens. Yet you will only require any external care if the cataract is mild, and you may prevent surgery.

It's much safer to avoid cataracts. You should make sure to shield your eyes from the sun's damaging UV rays in order to achieve this. Whenever you go out, wear anti-UV glasses and shades.

Diabetic eye disorder

There are a lot of eye disorders due to diabetes. Any of these have distorted vision, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Diabetic Retinopathy, however, is one of the most significant ones we will speak about in this segment. It is one of the most prevalent eye disorders in elderly people and can ultimately lead to permanent loss of vision.

The early stages of the damage may not present any signs or symptoms, you can experience diminished night vision and blurred vision in the later stages. There's a risk you could start seeing colorless spots in your field of vision swirling about. Floaters are called these.
