He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, completed his residency in ophthalmology at The Magee-Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, and fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Rohit Varma, MD, is a nationally and internationally prominent eye surgeon who has made major contributions to the understanding of the causes of, and potential treatments for, two leading causes of blindness in India: glaucoma and corneal disease. His pioneering work on intraocular lens biocompatibility resulted in a new FDA-approved plastic intraocular lens for patients with cataracts.        Dr. Rohit Varma is a physician-scientist who leads the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health, directs the Quality Enhancement Research Initiative, and coordinates the Center for Rheumatic Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is the author of three acclaimed books: The Roots of Ayurveda: Selections from Charaka; The Yoga of Herbs; and his most recent work   His first major contribution in this field was the groundbreaking finding that glaucoma is associated with a degeneration of RGCs, the retinal ganglion cell population that is crucial for vision. While some glaucoma patients suffer from optic nerve damage, many more experience visual field defects (VFDs) that correlate with nerve cell death inside the brain. VFDs are caused by so-called “blindness zones” within the part of the retina called the macula, which plays an important role in clear central vision. His work has also shown how VFDs can predict further progression Rohit Varma, M.D., Ph.D., MHPE, is a distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health as well as director of the Glaucoma Program at the Wisconsin Eye Institute.
