Dr. Varma is a pioneering glaucoma specialist who has treated more than 25,000 glaucoma patients. He is the first and only double board-certified glaucoma specialist in Los Angeles, having been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Ophthalmology. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Varma has performed thousands of glaucoma surgeries and countless procedures on the eye — everything from cataract surgery to laser treatments for diabetic eyes to cosmetic procedures. Dr. Rohit Varma is a professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, completed his residency in ophthalmology at The Magee-Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, and fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. After completing his training, Dr. Varma joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine; he became associated with UCLA in 2006.
Rohit Varma , MD, ScM, has received numerous honors and awards for his technological innovations and research, including the Charles E. Smith Life Sciences Award from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Outstanding Resident Award from the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a John A. Moran Eye Center Outstanding Achievement Award, the Karolinska Institute Medal for Distinguished Contributions in Ophthalmology Research from Sweden, and a National Institutes of Health Merit award.
Rohit Varma, MD, is a nationally and internationally prominent eye surgeon who has made major contributions to the understanding of the causes of, and potential treatments for, two leading causes of blindness in India: glaucoma and corneal disease. His pioneering work on intraocular lens biocompatibility resulted in a new FDA-approved plastic intraocular lens for patients with cataracts. Dr. Rohit Varma is a physician-scientist who leads the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health, directs the Quality Enhancement Research Initiative, and coordinates the Center for Rheumatic Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He has authored or co-authored more than 275 of peer-reviewed articles in the medical literature and has reconstructed a biomedical research career after being diagnosed with late-stage leukemia as a teenager. He is the author of three acclaimed books: The Roots of Ayurveda: Selections from Charaka; The Yoga of Herbs; and his most recent work His first major contribution in this field was the groundbreaking finding that glaucoma is associated with a degeneration of RGCs, the retinal ganglion cell population that is crucial for vision. While some glaucoma patients suffer from optic nerve damage, many more experience visual field defects (VFDs) that correlate with nerve cell death inside the brain. VFDs are caused by so-called “blindness zones” within the part of the retina called the macula, which plays an important role in clear central vision.
