Apple has introduced AirTags, and the world has gone insane. So here we are putting AirTags through the wringer to find out the things they can withstand.

Apple has introduced their AirTags which are designed to keep track of their lost stuff like keys. So, we will guess they are going to get through some tough times and tougher things throughout the day. To find out how well these Air tags will hang with you and your phone, we put them through some tests, and now let’s see how this 29$ product holds up during a laundry, freeze, and drop test.

The AirTags personally doesn’t come with a warning of it is waterproof, but when it comes to apple, they are dust and water-resistant. The Apple Airtags also comes with a user-replaceable battery which made us more curious about how it is going to hold up in the water-resistance test. So, we will not spoil how did it perform under each test. Let’s look at some of the tests we did.

Putting them through Wash

People always seem to leave their important stuff in their pockets. Then they just throw them in the laundry. We decided to take this situation for Airtags and experimented with what if Airtags went through the wash.

If Apple gives its products an IP67 rating, that means it can be dunked in the water of 3feet depth for 30mins. A wash cycle is mainly 54 mins. So, we threw the Airtags in the washing machine with some clothes. During the time it was in the washing machine, we opened the Find My app to see if they are still connected or working. We could still hear some sound playing from the tracker. It was very faint, but it was still playing. The signal was weak, but we could precision finding to locate the AirTags, but I had to stand pretty close to the machine to get it to register it. Once the cycle was complete, the Airtag was not with the clothes. It was sitting on the side of the washing machine drum. Then we checked if it was working fine, it was working fine the precision finding was working. Speaker worked as it was never in water. So, we washed the Airtag, and it was working fine.

Leaving it in the freezer

Now they passed the water test, and it’s time we get the new ones and put them through the test that Captain America went through getting frozen. So, let’s see what happens if we subject the Airtag to a really cold temperatureSo, we decided to put the Airtag in the freezer and then set it to a chilly temperature of -2.2 degrees Fahrenheit that is -19 degrees Celsius. We put an Airtag in an icetray and left it overnight for 18 hours in the freezer until it solidifies into a block.

Now when we put it in the freezer, we checked it a couple of times on Find My app. In the first few hours, it was pinging fine, and we could hear the sound just like it was new. After it was turned into an ice cube and was solid, we pulled it out and used the warm water to defrost it, and then dried it off. The sound worked fine as nothing happened. Then we opened the Airtag to see if some water crept in. Then we noticed that there was a small water droplet that was forming just by the water seal. So if your drop your Airtag in water or snow, it might be safe for you to just open it and wipe it off.

Dropping the Airtags

Now when we tested the Airtags, we found out that there were some scratches on the stainless-steel cover of the Airtags after we carried it for few days around us with keys in the same pocket as the Airbags. Attaching an Airtag to the important keys which you don’t want to lose and then dropping them from several heights onto rough roads.

The drops were not so damaging the apple logo on the stainless-steel side showed some scratches. Apart from those damages, there wasn’t anything unexpected. The Airbags worked fine. If you want to be a little more protective, you might want to find a stronger case.

How tough are the Airbags?

So, as you can read, we have put them through some real tests. In this world of some tough tests, they did well better than expected. They survived all the tests of washing them, freezing them, and dropping them from several different heights and several different times. Now Apple, in their official documentation, says that water dust or splash resistance is not permanent. It may decrease with regular use.
