An electric version of the Citroen AX was once in production. It is called Citroën AX Electrique. The interesting thing about AX Electrique is that its “drive train” is very similar to a toy car. The battery used is nickel-cadmium, and the motor is only a DC motor. Imagine that compared with today's electric cars, AX Electrique can be said to be primitive.

Performance is not Electroque’s true specialty. Its top speed is only 91 km/h, and its electric motor can only produce 27 PS at its maximum speed, which is only half of ICE's similar engine. Under the latest standards, the speed range of AX Electrique is only 80 km.

The early Proton car Proton Tiara had the only cooperation with a French car manufacturer. Proton Tiara’s 1.1-liter engine has 4 cylinders and can produce up to 57 PS. The gearbox is a 5-speed manual gearbox. This is a city car produced by Proton and should be called the “jewel of the country”. The reality is that Tiara is just the renamed Citroen AX.

How Citroen AX Electrique competes with the more modern car Renault Zoe (both French cars):

In cold climates, AX Electrique needs to use a fuel-based heating system to maintain a comfortable temperature for passengers. Just like battery technology in 1995.

Its electric drive system layout includes a large battery pack on the back and a DC motor on the front. Since AX Electrique is built on the ICE car platform, there is no room for batteries on the chassis floor.

Although AX Electrique does not look like a more interesting modern electric car, this is one of Citroen's earliest attempts to electrify cars. Before the appearance of AX Electrique, Citroen had demonstrated vehicles such as C15, C25 and Citela. AX Electrique is still the first electric car produced by Citroen.

Recently, we saw Citroen announced the Citroen C4 electric car and several other electric cars in its production line. Citroen also launched an impressive concept car in 2010 called Citroen Survolt. Compared with the era of nickel-cadmium batteries and DC motors, they have come a long way.
