In a powerful interview, Sir Elton John, who was joined by husband David Furnish, discussed the change that must happen to stop the killings of Black people by police. He also revealed that his AIDS foundation is helping to ‘amplify’ change.

Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish discussed police brutality, equality, COVID-19, and a number of other important world issues with Katie Couric on June 25, as part of TIME 100 Talks. As the founders of Elton John Aids Foundation, the interview addressed systemic racism and how the couple is getting involved with much-needed change. The discussion comes as protests continue, following the murder of George Floyd. Floyd, an unarmed Black man, died after being restrained by a white cop, Derek Chauvin during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25.

Katie asked Elton and David’s thoughts about the “transformational times we’re living in,” to which the singer had a short but loaded answer. — Change. “It amplifies that the world has to change. It has to change the way it is about the planet and it has to change the way people think about Black lives,” he said, noting that the current protests and Black Lives Matter movement against police brutality is stronger than ever.
